I'm thinking about holding a BIG sale.  I try to play them all in a gradual turnover but find myself sticking with just a couple.

Buying all those Basses.....what the heck was I thinking?!

It's time to give up the single life.

Peter,

Yes, he was in Champaign, IL for most of his bass building career. He's now in Washburn, WI. Not sure if he's still building basses, but he recently did some minor finish work on the 5st pictured below.

I'd be interested in a picture and/or review of the Gray, Loch - he once did some modifications for a friend of mine & the results were, shall we say, less than spectacular, but I've never come across an example of his own stuff.  If this is too far off subject, feel free to send it to my e-mail.

In order of acquisition.

1) 69 Jazz Bass in sunburst. My one and only instrument from 1976 til 2004(?)

2) Wishbass Scroll 4 string fretless made for me.

3) Wishbass Standard Spaulted Holly top 4 string fretless new off ebay.

4) MIM Tele, year unknown.

5) Frankenstrat, Fender body, Fernandes neck, with Alembic pups and electronics.

6) 96 Epic 4 string, well played by the previous owner, and absolutely spectacular.

7) Line 6 variax 4 string bass

8) Hohner BBass V. I have since modified it with active EMG's, a bone nut, and a Schaller bridge to take the string spacing from 16mm to 17mm. It has turned into a very nice player, and my only 5 string.

9) Custom Viola 4 string bass, body by Unorthodox Guitars and neck by USA Custom Guitars, with EMG electronics.

10) Wishbass Purpleheart Scarab 4 string fretless made for me.

11) Wishbass  Cherry Peanut 4 string fretless, ser #88, used of ebay.

12) Wishbass Purpleheart Hyper 4 string fretless, new off ebay.

Yes I like Wishbasses. Except for the guitars and the Line 6, I play them all, equally, ALL the time. The Line 6 is actually lots of fun to play, it's just a little heavy for jams.

I am turning 50 next February, and I recently have become enamored with the Music Man Stingray that is one of the Ball family reserve, with a flame redwood top. Georgeous. But I have never played a stingray, and at $2600, I could get a pretty nice Alembic. Hmmmmmmmm.

Right now, I'm down to four - I trimmed the collection down to just the basses I use. While the others were beautiful to own, I couldn't justify them sitting around not getting played.

So, in order of acquisition, and I've asterisked the ones I still have (the dates are the birthdates of the basses, where known):

Aria Cat Pro II (1988) (* Well, you never get rid of your first ever bass, do you? Also, I 'did a Jaco' on this and ripped out the frets and it makes a very nice fretless now)
Washburn Status
Westone Thunder 5 string (bleuch! horrible bass!)
Jaydee GA24 (1987) (I really miss this one, but the neck was just too whippy - just getting it from the car to the venue for a show would mess with my action so bad that the truss rod would need some adjustment)
MIM Fender Jazz Deluxe 5 string (nice bass, but this is the one that convinced me I wasn't a 5 string player - or a Fender player, for that matter!)
Alembic Mark King Sig Standard (2001) (beautiful, but HUGE!)
Alembic Stanley Clarke Deluxe (1993) (* my main stage bass - I can't see me ever getting rid of this!)
EBMM Stingray (1987) (* an ebay bargain from when the pound was strong and my main studio bass - just plug and play - you just can't get a bad sound out of this!)
EBMM Stingray 20th Anniversary (gorgeous quilted maple top, but just didn't sound as good as my old Stingray, so it never got used)
Status Graphite Kingbass Artist (2003) (* my backup stage bass, and the one I travel with - small enough to sling in an overhead locker)
Steinberger L2 (I already regret letting this go)

Despite my regrest, I can pretty much say I'm GAS-free, as far as basses go - I can't find anything I enjoy playing as much as my SC and my Kingbass. My GAS has moved over to amps, now . . .

K.
