Thinking back to my physics days I am sure this is related to particle/wave theory in quantum mechanics although on a larger scale.

Very cool! Interesting how the higher the pitch the seemingly smaller designs. I suspect this has something to do with higher pitch = smaller wave forms. Maybe quilted maple comes from trees that are exposed to high pitched sounds? lol
