A new Dallas Alembic get together
« Reply #30 on: November 13, 2007, 07:34:01 AM »
I'd like to see us try Sir Duke, and Frankenstein. These two should be a blast to play.

I get a kick out the fact that everytime people think Texas and music they think C&W(Country and Western)or Country Swing.

Lets not forget;
Janis Joplin
Stevie Ray
Buddy Holly
The Spin Doctors
Pantera
Don Henley
The New Bohemians
Kelly Clarkson
Steve Martin
Mercy Me
.....

Just to name a few other types of music from the Lone Star State.

Olie; there are reasons for that.  And one such reason is that the people of Texas collectively promote that image of themselves to the rest of the world.  Here's an example, and I'm going from memory here, so I might be incorrect.  I haven't watched TV in a while, but when I did, Austin City Limits was one of the shows I watched.  The opening of the broadcast included commercials from the sponsors, one of which was the Texas Tourism Board (or some such similarly named organization) (now that I think about at length, it may have been the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau); and the soundtrack for that commercial, if I remember correctly, was Miles and Miles of Texas featuring some really nice pedal steel work.

It's like cowboy hats.  My guess is that there are people in Texas who do not wear cowboy hats, and that there are people in Texas who wear other kinds of hats.  But the image people have of Texas is of a place where everyone wears cowboy hats.  And the image Texas and Texans collectively portray of themselves to the world is of a state where everyone wears cowboy hats (probably to the consternation of some non-cowboy hat wearing Texans).

[edit: typo]
[note: it took me over an hour to write this, and in the meantime Olie's posted two other messages; so this was a response to his first post about Texas Swing]

But Dallas is more like Southern Oklahoma than Texas.

Make NO mistakes about it, I am proud of my Texas heritage but I also find the humor in the stereotypical Texan.

Yes we do have a LOT of cowboy hats in Texas but we also have a ton of ?saggers?, (They must be proud of their underwear or something. I?ll never understand the look myself.) metro-sexuals and high fashion extremist. A virtual plethora of fashion and design. (And Bi-lingual too)

On a historical note, when we think cowboy hat we think Texas. John B Stetson, credited with designing and marketing the first ?Cowboy Hat? did so in Joseph Missouri. But they can be traced back to the Mexican Vaqueros of Mexico.

Proud to be an Earthling, (those Plutonians are just plain ol' ugly),
Olie
PS. I love Texas Swing.

Well, if we're gonna fight about Texas, we should do it in Texas.  Meet you in Fort Worth?

I must say though, I am very thankful to some distributing compoany for finally bringing Shiner Bock beer to California.  HHHHHMMMMMM BEEEER.

There are certain things I really miss about Texas.  Shiner being one of them.  Other fine Texas foods I miss:

Blue Bell Ice Cream
Wolf Brand Chili
Pioneer Gravy Mix
Bowl of Queso (i used to get the strangest looks at Mexican restaraunts here when I would ask for this)
Hot Links
Hartz all-you-can-eat Chicken

The lovely wife and I used to always stop in Balmorea at a little roadside store for their homemade green chili burritos.  They were heavenly..  Beautiful countryside in that part of the world too..

Have you noticed I've stayed out of all this Texas talk, BUT, that crack about Dallas being southern Oklahoma is where I draw the line, everyone here in THE SOONER NATION knows that the border is the south bank of the Red River!!!!!! LOL
and by the way
The O.U. Sooners will be #1 this year
look out K.U and L.S.U

The only reason Texas doesn't float away into the Gulf of Mexico is because Oklahoma sucks.
