Wolf, Fender for a while made a Duck Dunn Signature, but it passed out of the catalog. He now has another red Signature bass made by Lakland.

The reason I've always heard is that there's just too fractured an estate situation regarding a Jamerson bass, surprising inasmuch as his son is a great player on his own.

I don't know if Fender ever approached Larry Graham, but like a lot of cats who other musicians know about but not the general public in the States, he's well known in Japan, leading to his association with Moon.

Thanks for the response and information Joey. I have checked out some Lakland Bass's and in my opinion they had really decent playability. Most recently at the local Texas Amigos guitar show I was finally able to play a Lakland that came equipped with Hammon Engineering Dark Star pickups. It was nice to play but now I am so spoiled now by my Alembics.

Yes, but Hal you must remember how obsessive the Japanese can be about American/Western culture: Think of how into Classical music Japan is, remembering this is half-tone music in a country where their heritage is quarter-tone. Think of all the Alembic-ish basses from the 80's, or the various neo-Fenders now like Moon or the various Deviser brands.

Of course, this hunger for American Pop Culture abroad works to our advantage as well: David Hasselhoff has hit records only in Germany ! !

I feel you Joey, but my references in this regards were directed at American Iconic manufactures like Fender who had never created a Larry Graham Signature bass.

I am still on the question of how does Marcus Miller and others has a signature bass before the early pioneers and bass contributors like Monk Montgomery, and Larry Graham?

Watching Larry Graham in the 70's playing a Fender, made me want to own a Fender -- but my budget could only afford a Fender copy called a PAN bass (made in Japan).

Fender has a rich history, but their present management are treading the line of ignorance, which I would expected more from their leadership.

When they dedicate a signature bass to Larry, or Monk, I'll be the first in line to own them as a relic investment. However, until that time, I'll just say: its a shame...

Monk Montgomery and Larry Graham were certainly trail blazers, and without them, I wonder whether Marcus would be Marcus. That being said, I think we will all agree that the technical prowess of Marcus Miller is just on another level. This sort-of phenomena is not unique to music (and certainly not to bass players). My wife was an athlete in the first generation of competitive Women's Olympic Style Weightlifters. She is in the Weightlifting Hall of Fame and still has all of her American records (the weight classes were re-structured since she retired; therefore, she will have her records in perpetuity). Yet most of today's athletes have no idea who she is or what she did for them (she was on a committee that successfully petitioned the IOC to include women in the Olympic Games). It can be frustrating for the person and their supporters, but I guess it's human nature to ask: what have you done for me lately?.

i find that Fender is doing very well with current managment, look at the American Deluxes jazzes, they're amazing! i love them to death, real beauties also. give me a couple months and i'll be ordering an all black with maple fretboard 5 string(tuned EADGA, the last A being a guitar string which is something i've been wanting to try for a while)
