Last night I stayed up and watched the three-part video series that Dream Theater made of the auditions for their new drummer.  It was quite well done, and I recommend it for those interested in a very human and offstage view of a significant chapter in the life of a major band with a long history.  The video is similar to the video Metallica made of their auditions for their bass position.

Thanks for the recommendation Dave. The CD came with a 60 minute DVD of the drummer auditions which i guess is the same feature. I just haven't had time to watch it yet - Mrs J isn't a DT fan so I have to wait till she's doing something else before I can use the TV for my own purposes ;-)

Graeme; yes I think it is the same thing.  I think you'll like it.  Oh, and it's not really so focused on DT's music that people who aren't fans wouldn't like it.  I think it's a cool human interest story, well told.  I think that someone who has little or no appreciation for this type of music could still enjoy this video.  So tell Mrs J that I suggested it's not just for DT fans, and that I think she might like the ending; the ending is worth sitting through a bunch of flashy drumming.  In fact, it probably works best for someone who doesn't know beforehand who won the audition.  But of course for musicians who've played in bands, and especially for drummers, it's a very cool video.

Well I finally managed to make time yesterday evening to watch the DVD (made me late for rehearsals but not as late as the drummer) and as Dave has already said, it's an excellent programme. As it was teatime for me I managed to get Sandra to sit through most of it and she was almost as enthralled as I was although she thought Marco Minneman should have got the job. I don't know if it was purely because I already knew the result but I had the distinct impression that Mangini was a forgone conclusion even before he reached the rehearsal room. He seemed to get more screen time than the rest of the drummers put together. His reaction to the news at the end was emotional enough to bring a lump to my throat.
Just been reading a report that Portnoy may be suing DT although his lawyer denies it in the same report. As usual, some of the fan comments below the report are ludicous. I'd like to think that in the real world they're all still great friends.

Also, I have to mention at the minute I'm listening to The Dance of Eternity from scenes from a memory which was one of the audition parts and I have no idea how Portnoy remembered all the time changes never mind someone coming in off the street!!

Yeah; Marco was great!  I loved how the band talked about the joy with which he played.  Here he is in concert with Adrian Belew and Julie Slick.

I downloaded the stems for On The Backs Of Angels & loaded it into Pro Tools so I can re-record me playing the bass track & have a recording of me playing with my favorite band!

Mangini is an AMAZING drummer, he sounds like a drum machine when you solo his track!

That's pretty neat that they provide those tracks.

I thought so too Dave! They don't give you all the tracks individually, just guitar, bass, drums, keys & vocals. Each instrument has all it's parts mixed to one track, in other words, the rhythm & lead guitars are on the same track & multiple keys are on the same track, but you can still re-record parts & remix the song to your liking. I don't have a 6 string bass like John Myung has, so I'll have to get creative with Elastic Audio in Pro Tools to drop some notes an octave.
