  Heard my name ( http://club.alembic.com/Images/394/132964.html?1344441086 ) and wanted to follow up and express my thanks for a couple of way cool compliments.    (Not to mention answer a question or two using hundreds and hundreds of words where many less would be fine.)  
 
  Thank you Peter and Juan Carlos!  I'm flattered for sure!  Nice compliments!  
 
  For Juan Carlos, my answers to your questions and a picture from last weekend.  Can't tell from the picture but it was a beautiful location over looking Puget Sound playing the 66th annual Browns Point Salmon Bake in Tacoma/Browns Point WA.  I opened for the day and played a one hour set of my 'A List' and brought the house down.  Good stuff if I do say so myself!  
 
  Back on track.  I've been playing exclusively as a solo bassist for the last 5-6 years now.  Matter of fact, the last time I played with anyone was the 2012 Alembic gathering when I had Wolf/Sonicus take a ride/break on my 'Fun with Major 7ths in 6/8'.  I think I did a split bill with a friend last year, but generally I book and play as a soloist.  
 
  For gear, here's where the picture comes in, you can see part of my rig.  A 1000 watt powered Yamaha 5016CF mixer and a pair of ElectroVoice ZX1-90's and SB122 subs.  The ZX1's are 8 two ways and the SB122's are single 12's.  Works fine for what I'm doing most of the time.  (Any larger venues usually have a PA and all I'll do is use their monitors for the stage and let them setup and move all the gear around.)    Mostly though I use my own gear as I really, really like the sound.  Clean, crisp and just plain good.  
 
  My pedal board is pretty locked in these days, though I've got some ideas floating around in my mind.  My 'act' is based around a BOSS RC-50 Looper, GR-20 synth and a ME-50 multi-effects with an Eventide Pitch Factor.  Works well for what I'm doing.    
 
  Anyway, here's the afore mentioned picture.  For this gig, I'm only running two line signals, one from the looper and one going direct from the ME50 to the board.  I've not been using the synth much lately, but if I was I'd be running two more line signals for it, one to the looper and one direct to the board.  This way I can cut/boost the bass and/or synth independently of the looper.  Sometimes I run a drum machine, but since it's kinda 'weak', (Boss DR-3), I generally only use it for recording tracks 'offline' onto the looper and then build my loops on top of them.

Hi Vann-Di!  
 
  Yeah, that's primarily why I'm not using it at the moment.  (I injured my fretting hand thumb (tendon injury) and I'm way, waaaay out of practice).  
 
However, even in the best of times there are tracking ummmm issues.  What happens is the more I play it, the more I begin to subconsciously compensate for the latency, as it's a very real problem especially when using it on a bass.  It's too much to think about consciously as each and every string and fret have different response times.  I pretty much totally avoid anything below the 7th/8th frets on the B string and 5th/6th on the E string as they're pretty much not usable, (at least for me).  The A tracks okay, but the amount of compensation is still very noticeable below the 5th fret.  I understand the GR-55 has improved the tracking and improved the latency issues, but I've also heard it's pretty deep with the set up and honestly I don't feel the need to tackle any new projects.
 
For now, I'm pretty happy to keep getting my chops back and playing without the synth for now.  Maybe later this year, but then again maybe not.  Time tells.

Dear Kimberly: This afternoon I showed your videos and talked about your work to a couple of music students. They were in absolute awe (as I also was) and wanted me to tell you they liked your work a lot!. I also explained the basics on working over song structures and the way I guess you elaborate on a song structure when you do a show. Over here (Venezuela) is absolutely uncommon to see an act as yours, and most of the looping experiences my students have heard of are Rappers, but not real musicians making real music.  
 
I got very curious about the GK/GR setup since I've just got a GR33 myself along with a Roland-Ready Strat. I've been lusting after some tones and textures for very long, after hearing Metheny and DiMeola doing their thing in the 80s (go figure, the first one I fell in love with was the GR 707, that kinda spacey guitar from Roland!, and a friend had back then the GR505 with the GR500 floor module, of which I also loved the sound!) It has been just a couple weeks now, and I'm still trying to find my way around the setup (I managed to hook a Digitech RP2000 to the GR33's guitar loop for the guitar sounds, and go out in stereo from the GR33... still a little bit confusing for me to get around, but I'm going...). Now I am also wondering about a GK pickup for bass (Hey, I also have an Epic 5!) and see what can I do with it (although I have still to pay for the guitar system, hah!). You are very inspirational, and I wish you -and everyone in the Alembic family!- a very bright future!.

Wow....more and more compliments...To you and the music students, thank you very, very much!  
 
It's very meaningful to me that others find my music so enjoyable.  For me, I play because it's just something I have to do and for me, very powerful.  Sometimes it can even make me cry.   Just yesterday working up a Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World, it really hit me pretty hard.  A very simplistic musical version, but when I started jazzing it up and playing with the melody, it really got me hard.    Requested for a wedding I'm playing at the end of the month.  My first wedding by the way.  Next on the list is the traditional Wedding March and Bridal Chorus.  What's really cool to me is, it's call back from doing a 30 year anniversary store gig last year.  They liked my music so much they invited me back to play for their wedding!  Wow...  Now that's cool!  
 
Okay...back on topic.  
 
  I've got the GK-3B p/u and there's only a few things I can say about the system.  The 3B is supposed to be the improved version (over the GK-2) and unless they've come out with something new, the latest.  I use the GR-20 which is really a plug and play from what I understand compared to the GR-33.  However, I did notice there's a GR-33 *and* a GR-33B unit for the bass version.  I know the GR-20 has a software setting to adjust for guitar or bass.  As they make two different GR-33 units I suspect the guitar version wouldn't work as well for bass as the GR-33B model or maybe even not at all.  Might want to research that before buying a GK-3B.  If you do get a GK p/u I believe it calls for a 1/10 spacing between the top of the p/u and your strings.  I find the closer you can get it, the better.  My p/u is literally missing paint because I've got it so close to my strings.    Hope this helps.

I've got a 2 1/2 wide leather with lambs wool padding.  My bass stays wherever I'm playing it at the time like it's glued.    So, it balances just fine.  
 
(I also have the strap screwed directly into the bass with a washers on the outside (for just in case) to keep the screws from pulling through the strap.  Works real good.)

Let me add more compliments, your videos on youtube are great...! And i'd love to hear a jazzed up version of the pieces you mention played on bass (after the wedding of course, as you certainly don't want to spoil the surprise).  
It's good to read that music still has this effect, sometimes with all the  boom-booms in the charts, it feels like a vacuum!
I say viva solo bass ( while liatening to the Alain Caron/Michel Donato duo, electric vs standup bass).

Well, if you're going to be deciding something to post, let me add my vote for the SWOTR/WAWW medley.  I'm a huge Iz fan (though, fortunately, not as huge as he), and can't wait to hear what magic you work with it!
