3 string Roscoe bass
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:03:57 PM »
so today I went to my local Guitar Center in Greensboro NC where Roscoe basses are made, this Gitar Center usually has 1 or 2 so I go in there to check them out, well today I went in there and they had a 3 string Rosco with a buckey burl top that was gorgeous, but I was still confused. I picked and plugged it in and the next thing that happened.... the neck was unplayable!!!! The action was so low that not a single note was audible because of all the buzzing!!! They wanted $3000 for it and it was used! now I've never played a Roscoe that I was crazy about but this one was definitely the worst! I would have thought the Guitar Center would have at least set it up!(another reason I usually try to stay as far away from that particular Guitar Center as I can) I just thought I'd share this because I found it so odd, would anyone use one of these? admitedly it was tuned EAD so it would be easy to get away with using one of these but I just don't see a real practical application for it.
here's a picture

after breaking G strings at gigs ive gotten pretty comfortable with three strings and it keeps you in the 'LOW' when its solo time which is what 'BASS playing' is all about.

I could imagine a 3 string bass in that tuning being useful for reggae.
On the other hand it has been done before.

Well I play a lot of chords and higher register stuff since my band only has 1 guitarist so I have to fill in a lot of space playing high and low stuff so I need the G. I could see it being good for reggae, it just seemed odd to pay so much for such a bass

Don't forget Tony Levin and his 3 string Stingray. I believe it burned up in a fire but I remember seeing him play it in a video somewhere on the net.

The good thing about having 3 string Bass is to prevent against being tempted to tapping, ha ha ha...

Sounds like that particular bass needs to be converted into a doorstop.

I love the top, and I rarely use the G string, but when it comes down to it, this bass is pointless; the costs of building are the same or more(you'll have to buy a 4 set of tuners, cost of a custom bridge, etc...) just to remove a string that you'll have to pay for anyway!?
