Power Amps for Bass

Thanks folks, Lots of good info. One of the things I remember about the Crest 4801 is how it affected the sound. Is this an issue with newer amps? I remember trying a MOSFET amp back around the time I got the 4801 new, It might have been a Carvin. I didn't like the sound at all, seemed like it had no bottom end.

I think that's a function of the design of the individual amp, rather than MOSFETs in general. I've had lots of friends who have chosen Carvin MOSFET amps because of weight and cost over my objections and been disappointed (of course, there are those, too, who insist that their amps sound great. Then I give them an opportunity to play through a Crest, Crown or QSC). I think a lot of this comes down to how the companies represent their amps (see spec rant above). To my mind, if an amp is going to claim that it puts out X amount of power, it should be able to do it across the whole bandwidth at the same efficiency across the board. I think Carvin amps are very efficient in the mids and highs and generally don't have the oomph for the low end. Power supply issue? Maybe.

I played my Rogue for the first time today through a EV 3700 power amp w/ my GK Microbass as the preamp w/ my 4x10 GK and 1-15 EV cab - all I can say is WOW - what a difference.  I could really feel the low notes.  It was so clean.  And I only paid $100 for the amp.  Oh yeah / CL Nashville   :o)

So I've decided to go with a Crest 7001. These amps and other Crests from this period can be bought used in the $500 range. Everyone raves about them. This will be used for my big rig. When I get the funds together the rig will be a Crest 7001, Alembic F2B (or FX1), Alembic SF-2 and a Hard Truckers 2x15 cabinet. It will take me awhile, but the idea is to run my Alembic (when I get it - soon maybe!) stereo, so that each channel of the preamp and superfilters are assigned to each pickup.

Right now I have 3 amps that I love:
Meas Carbine 6 with 4x10 and 1x15
SWR Workingmans 12 Combo
Mark Bass MiniMark (2x6 speakers)

Wow! That is big fun, indeed. Maybe you can even run it so that each 15 gets its own pickup and run a fully stereo rig. Or, use the 15s for the neck pickup and get a double 12 for the bridge! In any case, I sincerely hope that a) you get a very sturdy hand truck for all this and b) I get to hear it some time!
