My Pono Is On The Way!
« on: November 29, 2014, 09:59:38 AM »
I got an email that my Pono player (Grateful Dead version from the Kickstarter campaign) is on its way to me!  This is almost as exciting as waiting for a new Alembic to arrive.  anyone else around here getting a Pono?

My brother got one last week. But he still hasn't reported in on how it sounds. The suspense is getting to me.

Not really clear who this is for. I love Classic and Progressive rock. Every artist I typed in said Coming Soon. What if they don't. Then I'm out $400 for a Pono?

So far I've listened on some lower end older Sony noise canceling on-ears, and a Jawbone Jambox.  Sounds great on the phones.  I'm really looking forward to hooking it up to my home system or my studio P.A.  Mine came with one Neil Young song, Workingman's Dead, and Terrapin Station.  I'm currently downloading a couple of albums.  The download seems to be very slow, but it may be because I'm doing it over a 4g network.

It plays just about any format, so I can load my FLAC files and burn CDs to it if I want to.

Jonathan:

If you search for an album or artist and it shows up with coming soon, it means the store has the album.  The coming soon refers to when it will be on sale to the public.  Kickstarter participants who have received our players are allowed into the store now.

I'd love to get one, but I'd hate to find out that my 3000+ cd's are inferior; I know they kind of are, but I don't think I want my nose rubbed in it...Tony

I think I'll probably download my favorite albums in the higher resolution a few at a time.  I'll fill the rest up with FLAC Grateful Dead files I have on my computer and the rest with ripped CDs.  THE Pono store has lots of albums in CD quality in the $12.50-17.50 range.  They currently have a bit less in higher resolution which runs in the $17.50-23.00 range.  Of course i'll be ripping the CDs I already own rather than buying the downloads.

Anything would be better than mp3's and that 'Tylenol' EQ they all seem to be mastered with.

I'm not much for these things.  I once bought a home computer, and my Geek Master at work reminded me to pay a little extra to get it with the software discs included:  That way, if it all crashed, I'd have the goods to reload.  I feel the same way about music, so the CD's are here to stay.  I know me, and sooner or later, I'd leave it somewhere, back over it, etc.

It's a full-time job idiot-proofing myself, even though I've almost got enough Doofus Credits to earn my bachelor's . . . . .

The Pono syncs with a computer like with itunes and an ipod.  Everything you have on your Pono is backed up on your computer.  I plan on syncing with two computers, so I'll have double-redundancy.

Bill -

Thanks so much for being the Pono pioneer and sharing your thoughts and tips with us.

Based on your experience, I'm interested in taking the plunge myself - maybe a good project for the coming year...

If you go to their web site, they are currently taking pre-orders for delivery in the first quarter of 2015.  If you order soon, you get a certificate signed by Neil Young before Xmas.  Supposedly, Neil will be signing up to 10,000 of these.  (I wonder how long it takes to sign 10,000 autographs?)
