Brian's Rob Allen wasn't the only fretless to arrive at a club member's house yesterday. I managed to score a near perfect condition NS CR5M at a very good price. Sounds fantastic through my practice amp - Eden Metro 210 and I'll be taking it along to my function band's soundcheck on saturday to see how it sounds through my full Mesa rig.

Anyone else getting a new toy this Christmas?

I've always wanted one of these beauties.I have the Stagg EUB and it's great but not in this league.Please let us know how it sounds through the big rig.

Graeme,
Your new compact double bass is of convenient dimensions. I had serious mixed feelings and a little regret when I sold my old acoustic double bass a few years ago and have considered the acquisition of a compact model such as your new one . Then I will approach working on my arco skills (bowing) with a German style bow instead of a French style. Perhaps that will be easier on my wrist .

Congratulations! Very nice! They are most certainly very convenient and sound great. The problem for me is that I have a German plywood 3/4 size upright produced during WW2 and it is resilient to weather changes and sounds great! But it is a pain to lug around. I thought about an EUB but I just can't get used to being jammed up against the neck. Just feels like the whole bass (to me) is missing and I don't have the patience to shed on what is really a different instrument altogether. Not sure if you had a similar experience in making the transition from a full acoustic double to an EUB?

Congrats, Graeme, these are really nice axes, and the Czech-built axes are very high quality, to the point of 'why would I pay that much for the US-built examples', same thing I'd say with the Czech Spectors.

One day I'd like to try his Omni bass, built on a 34 scale, with the trick compound radius fingerboard that can actually be bowed with frets, then strapped up and played conventionally like a regular electric.

Managed to spend ten minutes or so with the NS at soundcheck and it sounds fantastic. I especially like the arco tone throught my Mesa cabs - the 212 especially made the hall shake. needless to say, the fiddle player is very excited that we'll be able to get a more authentic sound on some of the 'traditional' numbers in the set. The tiny 'fret markers' make finding position on this instrument a breeze and swinging the balance knob slightly towards the Piezo setting gives a really nice 'almost' acoustic sound. It won't replace my Alembics but it's going to get a lot of playing.

I have been Jonesing for one of those for a while now and just missed out (by 5 minutes) on a ripper deal about a year ago.
I have read that if you favour the piezo pickup in the blend you can get a sound that is barely indistinguishable from upright.

These are VERY nice. Only beef I ever had was the lack of a rib to lean against, like my trusty ol' upright. Those who double on upright know what I mean... playing a standup bass is just such an extreme physical thing to do. OTOH, ain't nuthin' quite like it. Wish I'd had something like this back in the day.

I've been thinking about getting one of these. Sometimes lugging my upright around is a pain and I have to worry about it getting damaged.
