89 Series II 5 string
« on: December 16, 2006, 08:18:59 PM »
So what is an 89 Series II 5 string worth? It is in good shape with Indian Rosewood front and back. It also has the extended length neck.

It sounds amazing. My only other Alembic was an 84 Distillate and the Series II blows it away. Everyone that hears it says it's the best sounding bass they have ever heard. It has to be the bass, because it certainly isn't my playing.

There are too many variables to guess at a price from your short description.  You will need to post more details and a pic or two to get a reasonably accurate guess.

Wow, you guys are great. I had no idea this board was so active.

We are getting ready to leave for Christmas break on Wednesday and the deadlines are deep so, I hope a video will suffice until I get back from vacation.

This video was shot 7 years ago when I first got the bass. Their are 3 Alembics in the video. Mike, the guy featured in the video owned or sold all 3 basses at one time. He sold me the 86 Distillate, flamed koa, in 86. I sold it in 99 when I bought his 89 Series II 5 string.

What the video doesn't show is the typical dings that come over 17 years of use. Like I said, I don't have time to take pictures and upload them before I leave for Christmas. There are probably about a dozen nics. Most are minor. The bigger ones are about the diameter of a BB or smaller. The ones that come to mind are one on the back of the neck, on the back of the body, a couple on the side, the mahogony core, below the knobs, one on the tail piece and the worst one is where the head comes to a point. That one looks like it is down to the wood. The others don't go that deep.

I know you really need to see detailed pictures of what I have described, but until then, here's the video.

At this point I am considering selling because I don't play it any more. I gave up my last standing weekly gig in October. I don't have to sell it, but I would like to know how much I could expect to get if I do decide to sell. I know that a new one decked out like mine would be around $18,000. But that is brand new and mine is 17 years old.

Thanks for your help and patience until I can get some pictures uploaded.

Wow- cool video of a very lovely bass.  I only wish I had the cash to make an offer.  A Series II 5 string would be a dream.

Good luck- I'm sure you'll have quite a few guys interested after they see that video.

Damn, that video is bass porn if I've ever seen it.
I'd venture that bass should fetch at least three grand, maybe more. There's a forum member who has a similar five-string Series 2 he told me he would consider letting go of for $3,500 if that helps you any.

Thanks for the comments on the video and the pricing info. If the bass is worth $3000-3500 I'll keep it for a while.
