The top bidder has bought a five-cent James Gang tape, an LP and a book about horror movies...and then a $4,650 Alembic bass worth maybe half that.
Not buying it. Nope, nope, nope.

FWIW, Ebay is just getting downright scary...all the scams combined with high-ticket items really open-up the buyer to a prospective big fall. This is not to downplay the seller's risk as well, but it appears to me Ebay is increasingly becoming a distasteful place to do business.

well, when you're an alembic stud like me, you attract a different level of con-man. wait, i think i've missed the boat. does this mean they think i'm 4 times more stupider than you? oh, no! i'm having flashbacks to the time a bunch of us and our wives went to the saint the local gay, techno music club to dance one night and all the other guys--------EXCEPT ME!--------got pinched on the ass. i still have a complex about not being attractive enough to have my ass pinched when all the other husbands did! curses. first, the gays don't hit on me; now, the con-men do!

btw, the lucks really was a dumb-butt misspelling of looks.  man, my blood sugar must have been really low this morning when i typed that. i must have put too much heroin in my oatmeal this morning! i hate when that happens.

Dave, Why???...
After the 1st post on ebay, it seems obvious to me that this is a scam. The only way to deal with this bass would be in person, and then not only are you risking financial loss, but your physical health, too. my .02$.
OR, am I missing an alternative???

Yes, James, sure: trust in god, bid and lose a huge bucket of bucks... not the one alternative I would prefer, though :-)

You are absolutely right, there are a few auctions up on ebay that you should pass by: the RC of course, the white elan from the south, there were a few Alembic scams up from ebay China (not to offend anyone, but it's amazing how China developes, many Alembics already there), just to mention some. My two Euro-cents, I don't have Dollars :-)

James;

Why?  Because, while this listing certainly looks suspicious, and I tend to think that it is not legit, I'm not yet confident that the evidence is compelling enough to report the listing to Ebay as fraudulent and have it removed.

In the first listing the seller says he is selling because of a job change.  The first listing shows the location as Grove City.

In the second listing there is a new seller.  And the location changed.  Well, the first seller had a job change that necessitated selling a bunch of stuff; this could be construed to mean he has to move away.  So if he has indeed now moved and he hasn't sold all the stuff, then it's not beyond the realm of possibility that he may have asked a friend to continue trying to sell his stuff for him.  And in the second listing, the new seller states that she is selling for a friend.

The new listing shows a location of Delaware, Ohio, which is on the north side of Columbus.  There happens to be a town on the south side of Columbus called Grove City.  It is not beyond the realm of possibility that a seller who lived on the north side of Columbus may have a friend who lives on the south side of Columbus.  But then I've never lived in Columbus; so I could be wrong about that.

Regarding the first listing, Patrick states that he received a legit offer from the seller, because the seller was concerned about the high bidder.  Well, several posts to this thread tend to support this concern about the high bidder.

In the second listing, the serial number is unavailable because the bass is packed for shipment.  Now this is really suspicious looking.  However, again it could be the case that when the first seller moved, the bass was packed for shipping and then delivered to the friend on the south side of town to make it easier for the friend, since packing a bass for shipment is a bit of a chore and a bit much to ask from someone who is already doing a big favor.

There is certainly a lot about this situation to warrent concern; and it may very well be the case that this is a fraudulent listing.  And if it is fraudulent it should be reported.  However, I don't think the evidence is beyond a reasonable doubt.  Thus, I asked if anyone had emailed the seller, since it seemed that more facts might be helpful.

Hi Dave, you bring up some good points.
Still have a bitter feeling from the 1st listing.
Legit or not. Thanks for the perspective, though.
