Further on eBay - Great Price
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:46:23 AM »
Great price for a Further, though the ad is a little questionable - limited pics and a guy who doesn't know much about Furthers, thought he claims to have bought it new 2.5 years ago:

the Further model was used for Phil Lesh's Bass

here it is.

I tried to match up the size, lighting and angle, but I'm a bit off.  It does however look like the same top.  The knobs are obviously different.  The screws on the tailpieces appear to have the same alignment.  I was focusing on the quilt rather than the neck in trying to get the pics close, but looking closely at the Maple neck lams, they appear to match as well.  My guess; same guitar, but the knobs were switched out at some point, either by the dealer or the seller.

Or by photoshop, if it's a scam and the seller is trying to make it look different...

Isn't the tailpiece a little off-center?

Knobs are like jewelry, people change them all the time. I changed these knobs.

But now for the rest of the story... I wanted to show a Further guitar for the NAMM issue of VG. I'm looking through all my snapshots (remember, these are not professional photos), and I find this gorgeous guitar that I know will print well no matter what. I got the ad all done then darn! I noticed the knobs were our black plastic ones. Quite often on custom Further orders, our customers prefer the metal knobs; and given that, I thought that there would be a preference for seeing the guitar with the metal knobs. Since I couldn't change the knobs on the actual guitar, I changed them in Photoshop, by taking the group of four knobs off another Further and placing them over the slightly smaller black knobs.

The guitar in the ebay ad looks like it has legitimate wear from a couple years (see the bridge) and besides that the neck looks better in his picture from the angle, it's the same guitar, just with the original knobs.

Even though the seller doesn't seem to know a lot of detail about the guitar, he's got the serial number right and apparently has excellent taste
