Wolf I can't express how much I appreciate you keeping an eye out for me. I hope there won't be voltage issues. I may need one of our Alembic brothers/sisters to act as an agent for me to get it home.
Hey Mica, will this old IN-2 need a transformer upgrade for Oz? If I buy it can I get it delivered to Santa Rosa for a grease and oil change ?
How far away are the new ones? I could wait.

Whoa!!!! he wants $750.00. It belonged to Stanley Clarke For $750.00 Stanley should come and set it up for me. I think I'll wait for one from the factory. Warranty brand new etc.....

It likely might need work done. For what this guy wants I would buy a new one from Alembic when they are offered . I still am as well !

I obtained an IN-2 a few years ago. The one that I have used an encapsulated (potted in epoxy ) regulated DC power supply @ +/- 15 Volts , 500 milliamps. It was made by Semiconductor Circuits , Inc. with a date of January 1977 . I inquired with Alembic to verify if this was original and after having the good fortune of speaking to Mica and Mr. Wickersham it appears that it is probable that this was original for that time period. Before I even connected it to my Bass I thoroughly tested it with both a volt meter and an oscilloscope and the results were that the power supply needed to be replaced . I Contacted Semiconductor Circuits to inquire about obtaining a replacement and was told that they no longer could offer me a replacement with the suitable specs. I had one made for me by Acopian and installed it my self . It was in my rack at the last Alembic Gathering and Jazzy Vee even plugged his Series bass in to it. I played a few jams there as well with my 81-1940 Series I powered by the IN-2 . It now works swell !

But this unit may or may not need work . It could go either way. What does the owner say about condition ? Is it working ? The old one that I found had unstable voltage and bad ripple.It had been in storage for close to a few decades .I suppose it is possible that the electrolytic capacitors in the potted circuit my have dried out from non use. Has this one been bench tested lately .Has a Series bass been connected lately ? If he guarantees it to work buy it . You can repair it if it does not work and then you can also buy one of the new ones coming out just like I am planing to do anyway . This unit might have your name on it Slawie ! LOL ! Oh the tyranny of distance. I may be persuaded if I lived at least on the same continent. If I consume my savings for an untried, untested and unknown piece of gear chances are I may get burned. I've waited close to 9 years now I can wait a little longer.
BTW Is your unit capable of 240V operation? Therein lies another question unanswered. The seller says he has it on hold until Monday.

Just to help you decide, there is not much electronics involved here. What I am saying is that if there is something wrong, it can be fixed easily and for not much money. It's hard to tell from the picture of the real condition. But it looks fairly decent with some rack rash around the ears. The cap on the knob is missing too. By the way the cap on my IN-2 is blue and not red.

If you need me to help with shipping, I wouldn't mind at all. But I bet Daryl has no trouble shipping. He has experience with this sort of stuff.

The original Semiconductor Circuits Inc. encapsulated unit was 110 Volts Ac input and +/- 15 volts DC output @500 milliamps. Acopian made me a replacement unit 110 Volts AC input and +/- 15 volts DC output @350 milliamps. There is an important interior height dimension factor in the IN-2 enclosure to consider in retrofitting the unit and as a result the best that Acopian could was offer an encapsulated replacement @ 350 milliamps ( I believe this is good enough current wise for the Alembic Active Electronics even with side LEDS). I think that they would be able to provide a replacement for you for 240V input operation . You will also have to fabricate a new insulated stand off mounting plate made from plexiglass or PCB material . Your soldering and shrink tubing skills will also come in to use. I have done lots of this type of work over the last few decades since I was a teenager so my IN-2 restoration project was pure fun for me.

ON the audio signal side of the design there is no active circuit but beautiful passive transformers instead for the balanced audio interfacing with switching for 2 or 3 HOT . It is wonderful design !

Thanks for the offer Micheal. The brotherhood comes to the party yet again! It worked 7 months ago with a series 1 short scale. It is however configured for 110V so some work will be required either a step down transformer included into the power circuit to drop from 240v to 110V (torroidal transformer would be the best shape here) then to the potted AC to DC power supply or yes indeed a new power supply. I don't have LED's so the current draw would not require the full 500mA. The unit is on hold until Monday and I will find out after that if it is still available.
Michael, you know Daryl or know of him? He seems like a straight up kind of guy who responds to emails promptly and answers the questions precisely.
Thanks guys for your input. Those of you who have an interest in the IN-2 know I have been on the prowl for one of these for years. I love this forum!

If the unit is fully functional electronically I believe that your idea of the step down transformer is the simplest solution . In my opinion it must be kept separate out side of the IN-2 to prevent unwanted EM noise in the audio signal chain, just like you would do with a recording console . (my Soundcraft mixers all have this configuration.) it should work just fine and will keep the unit in original condition . Good luck with this project !
