Alemboid- What's in a name?

Hello,
I have been reading from the board forever, and can no longer not participate! I am an Alembic freak, was one ever since 1978 or so when I saw Alphonso Johnson playing a small standard Series One with the Crusaders. I had a japanese plywood bass at the time, and lets just say it didn't sound as good as the Alembic (duh!?!). Then I heard a Stanley Clarke album- the rest is history. I am the proud keeper of an Orion 5 fretless in vermilion, an SC deluxe in rosewood, and soon another fretted 5 string Orion, wineburst finish. Its the one pictured on the Orion pictures section, basses & guitars category. So, I too will post pictures soon. Perhaps after I recieve my new baby. Question- Can you really ever own just one Alembic? Rami- you dont need to answer! By the way Rami, since you've seen this Orion at Steve's Music, How does it sound? I live in Connecticut, so I am buying in hopes that it is a winner. Happy to be here!

Brother Paul (the good one - the artist formerly known as Elzie LOL) is one of our official welcomers and will soon be here. He's good at it (that's logic, it's in his name).
I'm th eproud owner of 1 (one - uno - ein - ??n - une) Alembic and it's suits me well.
Me too I would like another but for one or another reason it will be in the second place. I'd like another one first.
Brother Rami ... well that's a sad story. We all think he's addicted. Formerly he collected Porsches. He came to this club after buying his first Alembic for counceling and open his mind but ah, ...well ...you see what happened. He dumped the Porsches and he's completely into Alembics now!
He's now saving all his money to buy 2 more guitarstands (he has 2 already) and he wants to start this circus-act playing on 4 guitars the same time: left hand, right hand, right foot, only the groove with his left foor are not that snappy yet but he's working on that!
Anyway, it's an improvement because he was never THAT good in driving four Porsches at the same time, although he made it to two!
Anyway, a heartly welcome from this side of the pond!

PS: I gonna have to be carefull in writing this funny stories. Maybe I'll be expelled from the club! But You guessed it's a joke already! But you know, saying welcome alone is so dull!

I see my alter-ego, palembic, beat me to the welcome! As for Rami, all I'm going to say is that I'm trying to get him to adopt me. Then I could see that great collection everyday......
 
As for driving two Porsches at once, all it takes is duct tape! I actually saw two Nissans being driven at once with the aid of duct tape. Maybe you have seen The New Red Green Show?

As my user name states I don't think you can own just one Alembic. I discovered them in 2001 and have been hooked ever since. I currently own two Essence basses as my user name suggests but I have also owned an Orion 4 flame maple and an Epic 4 flame maple. The Orions are great basses but the Essence just fits me better. The Epic I was a mistake. The seller thought he had an Essence and I bought it sight unseen. Still a great bass though. The best part of Alembic is the people that make them. I have never dealt with better people in my life. I want more and more Alembics, someday. My ultimate dream is to one day finally make my custom order.

I first discovered Alembic when I watched The Who live on Live Aid (what there was of it on the BBC as the link failed) in 1986.  I can still hear Entwistle's bass sound now, as clear as day and I thought what on earth is that and I want one.  It took me some years to find out what it was, on this side of The Pond at that point in time, Alembics weren't exactly all over the place!
 
As for your question Can you really ever own just one Alembic? - I don't know - my first newborn is nearing completion.  I'm sure I'll be wiser in the near future but in the immediate future, near future and the distant future, I will be guided by the kind folks (both Alembic and out in the big wide world) in here  :-)  They've prevented me making some pretty stupid mistakes during the design and build of my bass.

We all share the same passion: ALEMBIC!
Like Rog I am also totally into John Entwistle and really am crazy about his original Spyder basses.
So I couldn?t resist and am now the proud owner of a Spyder 4 and a Spyder 8.

Hello fellow Alembinians,
 
It's so fun to read the responses of our european club members. I have travelled far and wide throughout the Netherlands (Maastricht, Amsterdam,Rotterdam, Noordwijk aan zee, Emmen, Utrecht, Zwolle, Harlingen, Gronigen, Meppel, Den Haag, and on and on) and not once saw an Alembic! I love Dutch country and would love to come back and visit again. I'm happy to see that Alembics are well represented there. I live in Connecticut now, and enjoy seeing Alembics being played in clubs occasionally.
 
I'm getting ready for Alembic #4. I hope to slow down for a while after that. You can see a couple of my basses at www.hilgraves.com/bryant  
 
If any body is interested, I am selling my Wineburst Orion 5. She is perfect- except that I really want an all natural finish bass. I have the urge to get a Walnut or Amboyna burl topped bass, probably an Orion 5. We'll see what comes of it.
 
For your extra basses, do any of you play fretless bass or all fretted? Just curious.

A belated welcome to our little club of extremists!  Nice webpage ya got going there, and excellent taste in basses.
 
I used to own an SC Deluxe much like yours.  Awesome little basses.  Your fretless Orion is also quite the killer.  Can't wait to see your #4.  Amboyna burl would make a really nice top.
 
I just recently got into playing fretless, so one of my extra basses is a fretless 6 string.  I fooled around about a year and a half ago and let a 3/4 Mark King fretless 5 string get away from me.  If I ever see that bass again......

The two basses pictured with you on your ID page are beautiful! With those two beauties, I'd be finished for good!!!!!
 
I built the Sadowsky bass you see on my page. I used to work for Roger Sadowsky not too long ago. I'll admit, because of Alembics, fancy wood was a must for the top and fingerboard on my J bass.  
 
I gotta say, there is something about those omega cuts that look so cool/classic.

BTW-Is that the same Wineburst Orion that was offered up at Steve's in Montreal?  What are you looking to get for it?

Yes, I bought the Orion from Steve's Music in Montreal. Its the first ever Alembic to bear the wineburst finish. Tone, playability fit & finish are all tops. I love Orions, but I prefer all natural finishes...so, I have elected to sell it.
 
Price wise, I figure about $2200, given that it is new and perfect. I may teeter a bit on the price. How about $200 off for Alembic Club members? lol
 
I plan to get another 5 string. I haven't selected any wood combinations yet. I also decided to keep the number of Alembics I own to three. I don't want to crowd Rami! lol!  
 
This will be a challenge given the endless possibilities from Alembic.
