Bass Weight

Does anyone in the club who owns a 5-string Balance K body shape with a mahogany core know what the weight of it is?  I'm sourcing a wall hanger and I want to make sure I get one that's strong enough.  Thanks.

My MK Sig Dlx 5 (mahogany core, 35 scale, cocobolo front & back) is exactly 12 lbs.  The main reason why I sit down to play it, even at gigs....

Thanks, guys.  This is helpful.  The tolerance on the wall hanger is 15 pounds, so I think I'm safe.

Were it me, 15 lbs tolerance would be way, way too low. By at least 10x.

I can relate to that, being that this is an expensive custom instrument, but I have not seen a wall hanger that supports that amount of weight.  If one exists, please point me in the right direction.

Were you looking at the String Swing (Brand)Hanger?

I\ve been hanging all my axes (see exception below) on them for years including my Elan six string. Fastened right into the stud (wood). Have to say though I won\t even consider hanging my Series bass on any hanger, that bass resides in its case when not in use. I also FWIW use the Hercules stand for my S1. Awesome product.

I was actually looking at the Hercules hanger, but I will check out the String Swing.  Honestly though, I'm now having second thoughts about hanging the beast at all.  I'd prefer to keep it on a stand as well, but I have a 2 & 1 year-old running around.  Toddlers + Alembic + floor stand = years of calling myself incredibly stupid.

15 lbs hanging on the wall sounds a lot safer to me than in a stand on the floor with kids that age.  I'd prefer the former even if I was living in an earthquake prone area,  Unless of course that stand is surrounded by bullet-proof glass. As for the amount of weight a good hanger can take, I recently attended a party at a house in which a full size acoustic bass was hung on the wall for decoration.

If you aren't playing it - KEEP IT IN THE CASE.

You'll thank yourself later.

I've used the Hercules wall hangers that automatically lock when a guitar is placed in it.  I read somewhere that the Rickenbacker company uses these in its showroom in case of earthquakes.  The screws they come with are a little short, IMHO.  I replace them with something more substantial.

I had a friend who made a product called Guitar Wings, which were oak hangers that were awesome. I'm not sure what the actual weight rating is but they seem very sturdy Sadly, they discontinued production, although I managed to get a few of them. Maybe someone could take the design and run with it!
