Well then a few months ago I bought a couple of pieces of cedrella from a former luthier who was selling his woods. (Mica, I'll bet Ron and Suzan probably know that guy, his name is Anno Galama) And having played a couple of his guitars made from Cedrella I have a pretty clear idea on what kind of guitar I want to make from it.

This is a JayDee Custom Iommi SG, the guitar I based my ideas on. I own a Gibson SG so I have the refference material on how to built this. I am planning to make the guitar with a Neck through construction, figuring that it would be an improvement on neck stability. I have two options on how to make this work though

Option one has the neck made of Mahogany with Maple contrast stripes.
Option two has the neck made out of maple with no contrast stripes.

What do you guys think, which one should I go for?

Anno Galama and a Firebird made from cedrella. I actually played that same guitar he's holding there and was amazed at how it sounded.

Can you split the difference? Necks tend to be more stable when they are made up of three or more pieces of wood.

I heard Galama stopped. 't Was his back, wasn't it? I know of one of his tele still being for sale, not too expensive due to a broken headstock. Must have been quite a drive (3 hours?) for you to get to Frysl?n... I agree with Bill over the mahogany (the guitar being an SG), though maple would be structually stronger, of course. I have a friend who, I think, has built a neck through SG. Maybe you'd want to contact him for advise.

Here's one I made for our guitarist's 50th birthday 4 or 5 years ago.

It's based loosely on a PRS Santana. It's mainly mahogany with a fabulous quilted maple top. It has a set neck with rosewood fretboard. Best of all, though, Jeff uses it as his main guitar in spite of having a Les Paul and a couple of Strats...that's a huge buzz for me.

Wow and he plays it left handed and upside down.
Well cool.
The guitarist in Gil Scott Heron's band has a PRS strung that way too.

He plays his Fenders upside down (Don't ask me what he's doing!!)...

...but the one I built for him, I built left-handed, but strung right-handed.

As you can see in the first picture, the controls are in the right place, unlike this Strat, where they are under his armpit!

It has been rather quiet concerning the work on my SG, this had a reason of course: the company I work for had a stand at the Frankfurter Music fair (The European version of the NAMM) and we were firing on all cilinders to get those instruments finished on time.

But now that that's behind us, I started working on my SG project again.

This is my SG Tele which I built back in 2002 which I recently refurbished into the condition you see in in this picture. I use that guitar very much, as a back up to my Gibson SG standard. I always kept the routing template of that guitar but when I compared that one with my Gibson, it was revealed that I got the body size wrong; it was way too fat and wide.

So I had to make a new routing template.

In order to prevent such a thing from happening again, I played it safe and traced my Gibson on the plywood, making it exactly matching the real thing. This picture also shows the heartline and an artist impression of how it would look with a strat pickup set up.

I got this neck from a friend who said that he never had time to finish it himself, so I can use that one as refference material. (and to put it on a body later of course)
