Not your usual neck laminates

Since a wood will have the biggest effect on the tone if it is in the neck, I wonder what would happen if you use cocobolo for neck laminates.

And is it not one of the reasons for the high price of cocobolo that not all the wood looks nice enough to be used as a top or back laminate? So perhaps there is more affordable cocobolo available for neck laminates.

Adriaan,

I asked about doing just that-- the reason it isn't recommended: neck woods should have very straight grain.  Also, cocobolo is oily, and can be tricky to make adhere properly.

Don't we have a documented case of someone refusing a cocobolo top because it had such straight grain? The bass eventually wound up in Scotland, if memory serves me right ...

So what would happen if you had a straight grained piece of cocobolo, big enough for a neck lam, and you would sandwich it with two ebony lams?

If you want to find out what the Coco Bolo does, I wouldn't pair it with Ebony, since Ebony really takes over and dominates the sound.

I might convince my mom to do an experiment on Coco Bolo neck laminates. Of course, if you want to find out sooner...

Dreams can soon become rather costly, from what I hear. ;-)

As I remember it, it was *switching* to a different piece of wood.  I actually picked the straight piece first (and I think my wife still likes it better!).

Mica, as long as you're experimenting, pair it with my other idea about a coco bolo bodied bass.

In fact, do it with all coco bolo and purpleheart.  That'd be perfect.  Oh, and a maple fingerboard (kidding!).

Ahh!

I had initially picked out a piece of cocobolo, and changed to another one.  I thought y'all were referring to me.
