Author Topic: Using the Band pass on the SF-2 (Read 326 times)

Now that I've had my SF-2 for awhile now I have pretty much used the Low Pass to High Pass in tandem to get some nice results, especially with my Distillate. Also when reading people's suggestions it usually comes up with same ideas. I have just started to use my SF-2 in a Band Pass to Band Pass in tandem. One set on the low end ~100hz and the other on the higher end ~notch above 680hz. Then varying mix levels and the like. We all know how infinite it can be!
So question does anyone use their SF-2 in this manner and if so what do you come up with? My settings take some of the mid level honking out and gives the low end a bit more punch and the second Band Pass reinforces the high end.
Jury's still out.

Pete, I use my low channel in Band Pass & use the frequency control to dial in the punch from venue to venue. I can rotate the knob 1/8 up or down on either side of the 110Hz mark to get my low end punch like I like it, then use the Dampening Ratio to make it tighter or fatter sounding. I set the Dampening Ratio around 3 or 4 for a tight kick drum type punch & 6-8 for a fuller P Bass type low end. I run the high channel in High Pass to put an edge on my top end, & I can flip it to Low pass with the same settings for a midrange boost. The SF-2 truly is The Swiss Army Knife of tone shaping! It is the missing ingredient for ANY sound you want to get!

Not sure if you are aware, but I was told that 6 on the filter gain is unity gain & either side of 6 is boost or cut.

The low end Band Pass is exactly what I'm doing as well, good advice on utilizing the Dampening Ratio. I heard about 6 being unity on the filter gain but didn't know below 6 was a cut?
Still experimenting with using a Band Pass on the high end as well.

There is no cut in the gain control. The only way to truly get a cut is to remove the direct signal and add back what you want with the filters.

I use bandpass a lot, sometimes to bring out fretless-like qualities of the bass, or other times to fill in frequency spectra that the rest of the band isn't. Lots of options and it's hard to make generalizations as there is so much that's useful.

I've been doing that on the high end Band Pass lowering the instrument input and gaining the filter end. I have a bright Bass. The balancing is the key and I'm getting good results.
I also found that the Band Pass sweep is an effective way in finding what freq you like and what freq you want to remove.

Yep, this was just what the Doctor ordered in getting my sound starting point. SF-2 run in mono 1st side band pass freq set between second and third notches below 110hz. Input gain all up, filter gain 5-6 damping 3-4.
Second band pass side freq 1 notch below 680hz, gain 5-6, filter gain 5-6, dampening 4-5.
Got my low end, punch and high sparkle!
Makes me wonder if I should have gotten this thing first?
Nah, Alembics basses have been a game changer for me! This is icing on the cake. The thing is to think of this unit not so much as what it can necessarily can do but what deficiencies do you want to correct for your needs on just about any bass.

Still the most amazing tool in my rack after 21 years of use.The SF-2 but I have really never used the band pass until last night.At this certain stage I was able to dial in massive low end on the A channel using band pass and keeping channel B in high pass for the top end.

After a couple of numbers I had to dial the level back a bit on the low end to keep patrons drinks from vibrating of the tables.The guitar player comments that I have the rig from Hell and to never change.

A comment from an audience member praised my tone and asked how I achieve such great sound.I pointed to the SF-2 and told him that after 21 years of service it has been with me at nearly every gig I've performed.Then I told him that I'm still learning it's total function.

He laughed.

The band pass,I'm still learning.

Dave,
That was the pleasant surprise of using the Band pass for the low end channel 1 was the Low End Response!!! You can dial in the right frequency and make the place Roar!
Like you I have to watch it, not so much that the Low end is louder but because of it effects.
This is so cool!
