Neck Pickup Toggle on Tribute
« on: March 03, 2008, 04:46:53 PM »
I'm having some difficulty with the Neck Pickup Toggle switch on my Tribute.
It's requiring some extra wiggling of the black plastic lever to get the pickup to engage.
I'd love any fix suggestions.  Thanks.

Is the switch tight against the body?

The lever is black metal. If yours is plastic, then something is awry. That being said, there is a relatively easy fix for this problem. Give me a couple of days and I'll add it to the FAQ with pictures and post here that it's ready.

Ack! Sorry I didn't get this done yet. I will not be around here regularly again until April 2. So to get you going until then, call up the office at 707 523 2611 and let my aunt Mary know you need to talk to Tony about pinching the 3-position switch on your Tribute. He's been talking a few folks through this, so I thought an FAQ was in order. Call us up and we can talk you through it too.

I still will get this FAQ posted, but not for a little while now.

Mica,
I spoke to Tony who told me about the pinching technique.  Problem was...I couldn't get the toggle through the hole in the body and into the body cavity to attempt the repair.  Haven't seen this fix posted in the FAQ yet.  Let me know when it's added.  Thx.

Is your problem that the wires are too short, or something else is in the way, that prevents the toggle from dropping down?

I'm assuming that you unscrewed the ring/nut on the top, but it still wouldn't move. This is a somewhat separate problem, not likely to be addressed by the FAQ, so I thought it was worth asking.

As long as the wires look long enough and you don't believe you'll damage anything else, I would suggest pulling - or twisting a little - on the body of the toggle from inside the cavity. Perhaps the wood has swollen a bit, but aside from the nut on the top, there should be nothing holding the toggle in place.

Assuming you get that far, the pinching technique is pretty simple, but the key is to come up with a good tool, preferably so you can squeeze the pins together, rather than try to tap them in from each side. If you don't yet have any great ideas on that, email me.

(Sadly, I pinched mine, heard the pins click in place, and while it helped a little, I still needed a new toggle. But from what I understand, most of them can be fixed.)

Here's the pinching protocol:

This is the pin you want to tighten up. There is one on each side of the bushing.

 Here's how we do it.

This is the modified needle nose pliers that do the job for us.
