Pot Essence 94k8342
« on: July 29, 2013, 05:39:21 PM »
Hello, I have a problem in my Essence, the pot Low Pass is spinning endlessly, it works but turns without stopping, do not know what caused it, but it can be a misuse or malfunction. I want to replace it, but I live in Brazil, so I would be able to buy this potentiometer, I have friends that always comes from the USA to Brazil and then he can bring to me! And also like an opinion about a big brand in low relief that is between the pickups on the low B string, as in the picture. When I bought this bass was already like that, but the brand is ugly! If I have to redo the paint or vernis, the bass will lose its originality and its value? I want to know if you recommend doing this repair. Thank you in advance for your attention.opinion about a big brand in low relief that is between the pickups on the low B string, as in the picture. What you're describing is a failure of the stop in the pot. It usually fails after a hard force is applied.

You can get a replacement pot from us. Just send an email to me at the address in my profile and I'll send you the details.

You can replace with a 10K audio taper pot if you can find one locally.

I'm not an expert in vintage guitar values, but if it were mine, I'd get the finish fixed. Others might have a different opinion, someone else will probably chime in their suggestion.

If we were to fix it, we'd refinish the whole thing and make it like new. But that's just how we do it.

Salve, Everton, sou um colega brazuka aqui do Alembic Club. Bem vindo!

http://alembic.com/club/messages/16271/16345.html?1307055464

Sorry for writing in portuguese, is much easier to me and would be funny write in english first to another brazilian alembician. But don't want to look rude, if you want to know what I said to him, there is an effort of free translation below:

Hail, Everton, here is a brazilian fellow at the Club, welcome!

Concerning originality, check the Truss Rod cover plate at scale's end. May the photo tricks me, but it should be brass with engraved serial number.

Screws are wrong, too. One should be at PU's top (pushing it towards the body) and the other should be below (to pull it away). And they are alternated on each side and inverted between sides. Check this link:

It is a shame previous owner had abused this Essence like that. I can bet the same person that mistake with the srews tried to brutally took knobs out and broke them (to lose them you must lift its cap - truly a lid that hides a screw accessed by the top).

Hey, you should buy from Mica. Alembic's standards are very high and the pots they use seem never fail or oxidize. The investment will pay off, we don't have pots like this in Brazil, believe me.

Regarding finishing, note that they use glossy polyester. If you really care about originality, don't use varnish.

That is what I was talking about knobs, Everton:

And guidelines for adjusting PickUp height with Alembic's springless system:

Alembic user manual:

Take sometime to check old threads in Club, as FAQ and Must Reads, either. There are several valuable infos in depth about alembic, bass and music. Like that:

I wouldn't worry about refinishing vs. originality.  Alembics aren't like old Fenders which have a vintage/collectors value that is greatly diminished by re-finishing.  Go ahead and make it look just like you want.  If anything, it will increase it's value.
