Any ideas?
« on: March 27, 2006, 08:59:12 AM »
Hey everyone,
I have to do a psych project for my psych 231 class.  It has to be about human bahavior (ie. are men or women more likely to come to a complete stop at a stop sign etc.), but I would really like to relate it to bass or preferably just Alembic basses. Any ideas and/or input would be great.
Thanks a lot!

Man I can think of several topics here;
A bassist/guitarist can walk passed 100 instruments at a music store or guitar show and stop dead in his tracks at an Alembic.
See a bands equipment on stage and notice an Alembic bass and before the bassist plays a single note you have a preconceived idea that this cat can thump.
Why are men more apt to be loyal to an intrument like Alembic rather than women.

Maybe you could do it on obsessive/compulsive disorder.  I'm sure there are a few here that will admit to it.

hmmm thats an interesting idea olie...I could take my alembic up to guitar center (i know the manger) and I could have them hang it liek all the other basses and see if people are more apt to pick up the alembic as opposed to all the other basses...I just may do that.

If they stop and look but don't pick it up you can ask them the reason they didn't. More often than not I bet they'll say they were afraid to pick it up because of its value. And have them rate Alembic intimidation factor. You can title the project Alembidation.

Olie,

Are you saying that men have more tendency than women to be loyal to an instrument,

-or-

Men have a greater tendency to be loyal to an instrument than to a woman?

Wait, don't answer that.

Well let me compare.
I've been playing bass for over 31 years and have owned more than 40 different basses. I currently have 16 basses, assorted brands.
I have been marrried only once, and am still married to the same woman for 27 years now.
So the question is, am I more loyal to her or am I afraid I'd loose the basses in the divorce!.....................
Just kidding dear.

A lot of people here seem to write about Alembic envy, or sometimes even hostility to owners if they're not perceived as music gods, if you catch my drift.  Maybe you could write something about how fine gear intimidates others, or impresses upon people some other sort of preconceptions?
Just a thought!

Or maybe bigotry, e.g. the but that's not a Fender crowd.

There are some threads with very colorful anecdotes here about just that subject (e.g. Bass Discrimination)

I say who cares what you play, just so you CAN PLAY. Some of the greatest players in the world played, Fender(Jaco), Yamaha (Patitucci), Sadowsky (Will Lee) and of course Alembic (Clarke).. the list goes on.
On a side note, some people may ask why I included Will Lee in the above list. Will is what I call the workin' mans' bassist. The cat shows up everywhere, and can play his butt off. Any style, any type of music and enjoys the heck out of it!
