Hi to everybody !
The dream has come true - i own my first Alembic !!
It's an Epic 5 # 94W8225. May be someone let me know more about it ?
I know that Epics are made from 1994, and on Ebay i saw Epic 6 with # 94W87... Does it mean that mine is one of the first Epics was ever made ?
Can i switch it to passive mode ? there is no any switches, only 4 pots. When i turn the bass pot to minimum value - the sound is changing, i hear lot of bass in it. Is it low-pass filter or something else ?

Welcome to the club! You will find that these pages are populated by an extemely friendly, knowledgable, and helpful group of people. While I am a guitar player with only a limited knowledge of basses, I can refer you to another place on this site that provides some of the info you are looking for. First, here is a link to the Serial Number page which shows that your Epic is indeed from the first year of production.

I also have an Epic, 94W8181. No, it can't be switched to passive. The bass and treble controls are just basic tone controls rather than filters. You have a very nice bass. Have you had a chance to play it with your band? I know you'll enjoy it.

Awesome looking Epic! There are one or two people on the forum that have 93 Epics, and the very earliest ones have the serial # in the control cavity, but they're also from 93.

About the contols, I think you may be confusing the controls - either that, or someone changed the electronics setup ...

If you have the bass standing up and you're looking at the front, then the top left knob (closest to the bridge pickup) is master volume. Bottom left is pan, which has a center detent at the halfway mark.

Top right is bass, bottom left (closest to the plug) is treble: bass and treble offer a little bit of cut and some more boost. I am told that on later Epics the bass and treble controls also have the center detent at the point where you go from cut to boost.

Dmitry,

Does the bass control suddenly go from cut to full boost when you get to the full cut position, or is it just that the control works the other way round than you would expect?

If you're getting a big 'earth hum' sound when the bass control is in full cut position, then you have to check the control cavity: there's a small circuit board attached to the bass pot, and it's probably touching the shielding paint, which it really shouldn't do.

Dmitry, tell us about the music business in Moscow, are there gigs to play? having an Alembic in Russia must be special.

Yeah, having an Alembic in Russia is special. Cause I know only 2 guys who plays Alembic in Moscow. One is playing Rouge 5 (2001) in musical WeWillRockYou (based on Brian May & Qween songs), other played Rouge 5 (1997) in musical NORD-OST (before terrorists attack). It is very expensive for Russian musicians to buy such instrument. My Epic was bought used in Kansas by my friend living in Ottawa (Canada). And 8,Jan he came to Moscow with it.
There not to much places to gig in Moscow. Most of bars, clubs & restaurans prefer karaoke singers or singers with 1 or 2 musicians (keyboard like Yamaha PSR and sometimes guitar). Playing gigs in this places you can earn from 150 to 400 USD for all musicians. It's not so much.

Dmitry, your Epic was originally sent to Midwest Music in Ohio. The details are:

top: Flame Walnut
accent: Maple
body: Mahogany
neck: 5-piece Maple
fingerboard: Ebony
finish: thin polyurethane (aka satin natural)
controls: volume, pan, bass, treble
birthday: March 10, 1994

It sounds like maybe the bass potentiometer is broken. You can rotate it back and forth completely 20-30 times, and if it sounds the same after that, it probably needs replacing. Email helP@alembic.com if you need to get a replacement.
