Author Topic: Using Rotosound RS66M Strings on my Exploiter (Read 149 times)

I'm trying to put new Rotosound RS66M Strings (gauge is .40-.90) on my Exploiter, but no matter what I do (raise nut, bridge, etc.), I get huge amounts of buzz, particularly on the lower (7th to 1st) frets. Suggestions?

those strings are a light gauge and will put less tension on your neck than standard gauge strings. if this is the first time trying that gauge and you usually used standard gauge strings you may have to loosen the truss rods a little, just be careful and only make small adjustments and give the neck time to react to them. you will also have to re adjust bridge for string height and length. i used to use extra light strings on my exploiter and did have to make some minor adjustments at first but after that it played and sounded great. let us know how it works and one of the pauls will be asking for pics so get your camera out

Could it be that the nut has to be raised a fraction??? It's for the 1st-7th fret???

Pictures of new strings ...nei-eih ...if we started that, we would have about 100 pictures A DAY coming on this site. Although ...we had in a post somewhere brothers and sisters talking about changing the bridge for the use of naked-core strings. I'd like a picture of such a bridge in comparison with a standard one.

Wille and Palembic,

Did what Willie suggested, but no joy. Buzzed all over the place. I loosened the truss rods, raised the bridge and nut, but it buzzed like crazy. I guess I'm probably going to have to take it to a professional to have it set up for that gauge of strings, unless you guys have better suggestions. Thanks anyway for the info, truly appreciate it.

Hello Alan,

our basses are generally set for 45-105 gauge strings.
I am guessing from the description of your problem that the neck is bowing backwards, which is not too surprising because there is generally quite a bit of difference in the tension between most 45-105 sets and 40-90 sets as Willie pointed out.
Since the truss rod adjustment (the correct first step) was insufficient, what you probably need is to heat bend the neck of your Exploiter. A competent repairman should be able to handle it easily.
