Really good stuff! Trip's custom Orion bass has a Walnut top and a coated Ebony fingerboard.

I know nothing about fretless basses other than they look hard to play, but is the coating cosmetic or has it other properties that musicians can use?

The coating would enhance sustain, Jazzy. Jaco coated his neck with epoxy and Mark Egan's Pedulla uses a thick glass clear polyester coating.
Not just a bass, this is an Alembic!

I hope to have an Alembic fretless soon in the future as well . At this time I own three non Alembic fretless  basses that have a coating on the fingerboard. Two are Fenderish and another is a Pedulla such as Mark Egan which I have owned for about 10 years . My Fenderish coated Jazz since about 1992 . The coating does effect the sound and sustain but also enables you to be able to use round wound strings without damage to the fingerboard. When I acquire my fretless Alembic it will get the fingerboard coating as well .I very much prefer the sound of an Alembic to represent my sound . I might actually install some Alembic activators for the time being soon in one of my currant fretless basses .

The epoxy that Jaco used on his fingerboards, “Poly Poxy” was made by Petit Paints, a manufacturer and distributor of materials specifically designed and marketed to the boating industry. Jaco chose to use this particular marine-grade epoxy because it was extremely durable and readily available around Fort Lauderdale, where he was living at the time that he decided to convert his bass to fretless.

It is my understanding that he opted to use the epoxy coating primarily to extend the life of the fingerboard. He used round wound strings and played/practiced almost ceaselessly. Left unprotected, a rosewood fingerboard would have become so worn as to become unplayable in short order.

As to the cosmetic qualities of the Poly Poxy, rather than enhance or otherwise highlight the grain of the wood or other material that it covers, this particular product simply darkens the entire surface slightly. It also has a rather peculiar and slightly greenish tint that is most readily observed when covering a white or light colored surface. On the Bass Of Doom, this greenish tint was visible on the clay position dots and light colored fillers in the vacated fret slots. I referred to this tint as “baby poop green” and found it to be only moderately hideous in appearance. I’ve never seen it used on a maple fingerboard, but would imagine that the visual effect would be even a bit more hideous, but that’s just my taste. You might like it.

Trip Wamsley is a  really great and enjoyable fretless player  to my ears . I really enjoyed that video . Thanks !

I met Jaco  in the mid 1980's . A drummer friend of mine was recording with him. He took Jaco to a local gig of mine to barrow my bass rig . Upon entering the music venue that I was playing at I heard someone saying " Who is that bass player ? " He has got the right idea on that tune ! "  That was Jaco's voice complementing my syncopation and interpretation on a cover tune that we were playing " Sunshine Superman" by Donavan . I will never forget that moment. What made that moment even more precious was the fact that our " band leader " who was singing that tune had just berated and chastised the drummer and myself for our syncopated interpretation / rendition and playing ;  just as Jaco walked into the room right to the front of the stage where he stuck out his hand to commend me and the drummer :)  This really happened . !  Jaco was in the house.

Wolf that is fabulous, especially the “timing” of it all!

Bazzer, thanks for the insight on Jaco’s fret board.

I met Trip at The Atlanta Bass Gallery, shortly after I'd bought my new Alembic from them, in '11 or maybe '12.  Super nice guy, and a totally monster player.  He'd brought both his Alembics to do the workshop - a fretted and a fretless, both 5-ers if I'm not mistaken.  Then, for reason's unknown to me, Alembic pulled their dealership, ABG closed their doors, and the rest is absolute history!  I do remember Trip laughing about Susan's conversations with him on the phone over whether or not to clear-coat the ebony on his fretless.  (He wanted it, and Susan discouraged it.)  He'd gotten it coated.
I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

That's interesting. I have always been a fan of coated fretless fingerboards to get that particular Jaco-ish tone. However, after I played Harry's double neck on the fretless side, which isn't coated, I've rethought my preference, at least when it come to Alembic fretlesses. It was the most perfect fretless tone and feel I've ever experienced. Jim Cammack gets an amazing tone along those lines with his Alembic, uncoated fretless.
