How should the pickup screws look?
« on: May 28, 2025, 01:05:56 PM »
Hi, I am trying to sell a 1983 Spoiler that I've owned for 20 years. It sounds great so I've never touched the pickups but I was puzzled by a crack on the underside of the neck pickup.

After I made my for-sale post, someone informed me that the crack is from the pickups getting incorrectly installed- There should be 2 above and 2 below, whereas I have 3 screws above and one with what appears to be an empty hole.

Since then, I've read some more on the topic. I've shined a light in the hole, I don't see anything. What can I do to make this "properly screwed?"

These are the original screws Alembic uses, two short ones under the pickup and two longer ones top mounted:

You can order the correct screws from Alembic. Here is a post about how to adjust pickup height...

What FC and Stephen said.

Alembic's web site is down at the moment as their ISP is having some trouble; but you can call to order the screws. Their hours are weekdays 10:00 - 4:00 Pacific Coast time.  (It's a small shop, so don't be surprised if nobody answers on the first call; their all working on getting instruments built, inspected, and shipped.)

Phone: (707) 523-2611

Like FC said, there should be two long screws and two short for each pickup.  You might want to remove the pickups and see what you've got before ordering the new screws.

That crack on the neck pickup looks pretty bad; be careful when you take it out.  Hopefully whoever glued it up got it stable.  This happens when someone doesn't know how the pickups are mounted and tightens the top screw too tightly.  As Mica said in the post that Stephen pointed to, the top screws just need to be snug.  But do be careful where that crack is.

If you're in the US, those are stainless steel 6-32 pan head screws. Readily available at any well stocked (AKA old school) hardware store.
