Neck dimension question
« on: January 29, 2025, 06:36:06 PM »
Hello everyone,

I've experienced various Alembics so far and am looking forward to exploring more in the future. I'm currently wondering what kind of Alembic would have the most ideal neck dimensions for me.

While researching, I came across a post about a 5-string bass with dimensions of 1.75" (nut) and 2.75" (24F).

Would any member be able to share a photo of an Alembic that matches these specs?

It would be very helpful to me. Thank you!

Going by the Reference Pages those appear to be custom sizes, like Comfort taper but narrower by about 0.2" at both ends.

My 6 string bass has a 2" nut, which happens to be 0.2" narrower, so that gives you some idea.

OK, here's an example of a 5-string with a 1-3/4" nut but only 2-1/4" at the 24th fret.  This would be considered tight string spacing by most folks, especially for the plucking hand.

Gaining a full inch between the nut and the 24th fret may make the spacing at the bridge too wide - I can't quite do the math...  I suggest you tape together 4 pieces of paper (the long way) grab a straightedge and do some test drawings.  On a 34" scale, the 24th fret falls about 25-1/2" from the nut.

I was actually thinking that if the width is between 1.75 and 2.75, then at the bridge, the string spacing wouldn’t be significantly different from a standard spec neck, making the reduced neck dimensions somewhat meaningless.

I’ll try sketching it out as you suggested.

Thanks, Jimmy and Adriaan!

Do you have a particular bass manufacturer and model where you like the neck? This might give you an idea of what taper you would feel most comfortable with.

I don't remember the measurements but when I bought my first Alembic, a 5-string Orion, I compared the string spacing to my 76 Jazz Bass and found them to be very close in their dimensions. With my 4-string custom Orion again the string spacing is very close with the nut end being slightly more narrow than the JB and the body end being slightly wider. For me the variance between the Alembic Comfort taper and the JB taper is so small I don't notice the size/spacing difference when playing.

I also own two short scale Alembics that have the Classic taper. There is quite a difference between those and my long scale basses but to be honest it's the scale length more than the neck dimensions that stands out.
