I sold my bass
« on: October 12, 2024, 12:14:00 AM »
Yes, I sold my Alembic.......NOT my 82' Series 1, but my 80's Distillate back in 98. So, i dreamed of owning an Alembic, because of Stanley Clare, Mark Adams and Marvin Isley. In
91 My dream came true when i was stationed in Hawaii at Schoefield Barracks (Army). My Friend told me one day, "Mike, i found an Alembic bass on consignment in Honolulu at a
Guitar shop. So, we burned rubber down H1 highway. Got there and there it was! an 80's Distillate 4 string! Zebra wood with a long horn waiting for me. I was being sold by one of my other musician friends who played in Pearl city, but that's another story. Anyway, the price in 91 went for $872.00!! I traded my 82' Ibanez Musician bass for $200 and paid the rest! What a surreal experience to stare at this bass in my room from then on. THIS is my main and Only bass (Although i really wanted the Series 1, but way too expensive and not realistic at the time).

So, two years later, I'm stationed at Ft McClellan, AL. I was assigned to the 14th Army band jazz combo. One day the SFC approaches me and tells me in a stern voice, "I don't like the sound of your bass!" I didn't reply. To my pain and shock, i had no choice but to conform and put my Alembic away. From then on i only played what the band inventory offer, which was typically a Fender. I guess that Fender had a more appropriate sound for jazz, yet i used my 93' Musicman instead. HUUMM, the harsh toned Musicman was accepted for Jazz? Well, fast forwarding again, I was sent to Germany in 95'. I was assigned to the 1st Armored Div Band in Bad Krueznach. Did i play my Alembic? No. I guess i was worried another higher ranked section leader would "F" with me about it, SO.......I SOLD IT IN FRANKFURT!!!!!  AAAAAHHHH!!!! Years later and now i kick myself in the A#@. Even now that i finally own a Series 1, my 80's Disstillate is GONE!! I wonder who owns where its located?

Well... that's too bad, but it's probably still out there. I can remember several occasions on this board where folks got back a long-lost Alembic after a series of posts.

I guess the questions are; do you want it back, and how much trouble/expense are you willing to go to to get it? Would you be satisfied with another Distillate? (there are plenty of them) Also good to point out, Alembic will build you one just like it too, only better. None of these options will be cheap. If you wait for the right deal, a very nice Distillate will come along. On the other hand, you've got a Series bass, so other than sentimentality, what do you want it for? I think a backup Distillate bass is a great idea. Chances are though, it'd be a medium-scale, and different enough from what you're used to that it might not work out as well as you'd like.
---
I sold both of my Distillates, and felt great about it. I loved every moment I spent playing those two basses, but neither of them were doing a thing I couldn't do with my Series I or my Custom fretless, so I moved them to folks who put them to work. The '81 is now in the hands of a guy who plays with a top touring Country act... it's been used on a few hit recordings and at least one television commercial. It was his first Alembic, to my knowledge, his only one. The fretless Distillate went to a lifelong Stanley Clarke fan, (one might say, disciple) who had tears in his voice when he called to tell me it had arrived in New York... I had helped realize his dream to own a fretless Alembic. I was just happy for both of those guys. I have the memories of both 81D1986, and 85D3696 forever, so I don't need or want them back.

Understood. Well, i don't have the serial number of that bass. When i owned it back in the 90s, i just played my basses, not focused on the serial. It would be interesting to see it again, but as you feel closure on your basses going to someone else and getting such warm feedback from them, that's touching and a GIFT for them. In that perspective, I'm hoping the owner was just as happy as i was when I owned that 80s Distillate. Hopefully the musician still has it. Good for them. It's a great "Hand me down" from a series 1. Nice story.

Man, do you have a pic of your old bass that you are looking, you could post it on Facebook to Alembic group, I'm sure it could be found. I live in Europe so I could ask around, it is a small community of us Alembic fans. It could be done!

The bass player’s function, along with the drums, is to be the engine that drives the car… everything else is merely colours.

I do, but the only problem is the serial number can't be seen.

it's a Zebrawood 80's. I bought it used in early 91' in Hawaii. Sold it in Frankfurt, Germany around 97-98.

the drums is the Engine...the bass is the wheels.
