Fret buzz
« on: August 23, 2024, 02:52:35 AM »
I'm getting frett buzz only on my 1st position F. I adjusted the nut up and down. Raised thr bridge. Still same problem. My strings are old. Any suggestions.

I have actually had string buzz on one string/fret before that was the result of very old strings. Changing to new strings solved this problem.

Fret buzz on the first few frets can also be the result of an overstraightened neck so introducing some relief into the neck (loosening the truss rods) is the solution in this case.

You may also have a high fret that needs to be dressed a little.

However I would just try changing strings first. If the strings are very old anyway why not get a fresh set of your favorite strings and give your bass some TLC :) Maybe thats all it needs.

I had the same on the a few weeks back on the B/E string side on the first couple on frets and the solution suggested was to raise the bridge a tad. I did that and it’s been fine. It’s due for new strings then it may need minor adjustments.

If you change the strings and are using a different gauge and/or tension set of strings, you will probably need to tweak the truss rods a bit.  If you need to do this proceed 1/4 turn at a time and the the neck respond a few days before manipulating any further.

Not sure how much time you should spend trying to set your bass up if the strings are old. Once you remove that variable the suggestions being made here may be just what you need or the buzz may simply go away. As Brian points out if you put on a different brand or gauge of strings there is a better chance you will need a complete setup.

Good luck!

It turns out all I needed to do was adjust the dual truss rods.
