hieronymous bass covers

Most of my "live" performing these days is in front of my iPhone for YouTube. I recorded with my SF-2 recently and thought I'd post here - I plan to just post Alembic-related stuff.

I recently picked up a cheap bass - a Sadowsky Metro Express, their relatively new "budget" Made in China by Warwick line. I got the 2nd generation which has some problems with the pickups, so I upgraded them with better Sadowsky pickups. It's kind of an interesting preamp: volume, blend, bass (boost only), treble (boost only). Both pickups on full, I turned the bass up about half-way or more, put it through my usual compressor, then a Darkglass Vintage Deluxe overdrive that I picked up lately (has a clean blend). Then, since there's no tone knob and treble is boost only, I was inspired to wire up my SF-2 - low pass filter with no Q boost. The strings are round wound, but I think I got a pretty good sound here thanks to the SF-2!

My playing has been pretty idiosyncratic - I tend to play up by the neck a lot. But for this I wanted to go back closer to the bridge - pictures from that time show Bootsy plucking between the pickup covers on a Jazz Bass.

Loved this one Harry. I don't think I've heard you play in this style before now.

Thanks! Yeah, it seems like most of what I've been doing since the pandemic started was more rock-oriented, but I've been into funk and r&b for a long time, courtesy of Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius! I got into the virtuosic stuff with the help of Guitar Player magazine in the '80s while I was in high school in Tokyo - I had access to LOTS of records - between Shibuya and Roppongi it was a treasure trove! I got into James Brown and the Meters later, in college and soon after.
