(x) Elan 90H6034 - looking for info
« on: May 13, 2022, 05:03:18 PM »
I have had this bass for 10 years now and I am still in love. I'd like to get a little bit of info / history if it is available.

Thanks,
Eric

Since history requests are handled on a time available basis it can take a bit of time to complete them. If you post some pictures or have any specific questions club members should be able to give you some idea of the bass's build and answer your questions until Mica can complete the history search.

Here are the details from the instrument file:

serial number: 90H6034
model name: Elan
model number: HLB5
top: Ebony*
body: Maple
accent: none
neck: 7-piece Maple and Purpleheart
scale: 34" long
fingerboard: Ebony
inlays: Pearloid (plastic) ovals
pickups: Alembic AXY56
controls: "Elan Plus" volume, pan, filter, 2-position Q-switch, bass cut/flat/boost. treble cut/flat/boost. mono output
originally made for: Washington Music, MD
birthday: July 13, 1990

*the record indicates "Ebony" but it's probably Macassar Ebony, with the light and dark streaks. The original owner registered in 1991, from Alaska. Usually owner information is private, but I do share when the original owner was the 752 Air Force band since it's public money!

Interesting note... I have a buddy at work who played in the Army National Guard Band, reported once to me, they all used to fight over who was going to get the Alembic. Based on his recollection, I believe they had a walnut-topped Elan 4 from about this same time.

Washington Music sells to the military bands quite regularly. One of the reasons is that they've always given the government the same kinds of deal they would give anyone instead of going for full retail. Their location near DC is also a plus!

Thanks Mica! What an interesting bit of history on my beloved Elan! The bass is still going strong and sounding great. The top is indeed Macassar Ebony with a coffee and cream look.
