Help with my '93 Epic
« on: February 26, 2022, 11:56:55 AM »
I am looking for a little help with my Epic in the form of control cavity pics.
I picked up this Epic years ago on consignment at a music store in western MA.
There was what appeared to be an incomplete mod with a toggle switch and a couple
of unattached wires.  That has been removed.  There is also a toggle switch that is
between the 1/4" jack and the battery that allows you to leave it plugged in on breaks,
but, kills the battery from draining.   I know that from a conversation with Mica that is not a mod
that they like.  The wiring mods are more than a little sloppy and I am not sure if the wiring is correct and
that I could just cut out the battery kill switch.  I have a good tech who was a former Alembic dealer
years ago at his family music store.
I am a bit undecided if I should just send the electronics back to Mica, or have my tech, David, compare
some good quality pics.
What would be opinions here?  Thanks in advance.

Suggest you start by posting pictures of the cavity here? Depending on the replies you may end up with the info your tech needs or you may find out that, yes, it would be best to send the electronics to Alembic for them to sort out. I have a feeling the repair will not be terribly involved but admit to no technical knowledge about electronics.

Stephen, you kind of inspired me.  While separating the wires for a clear shot, I figured
that I should remove the 1/4" jack and move it out of the way.  The mods became a bit
clearer to me.  A couple of snips with the cutters, rejoin and re solder a couple of connections,
and it is back together.  I may still contact Mica and send the electronics back to be checked.
A question for folks with Epics,  I have the preamp turned all the way down and the signal still
seems very hot, is this normal?

Can someone explain what the cap does.  Mine does not have one on the output jack.
I don't think that the early ones do.  In the "Seen On" page Fivestringdan  posted a link
to a '93 Epic on Reverb and there is a control cavity pic and it does not have one either.
The pic is from the FAQ section under Epic, Excel, and Orion.
