New (2000) SC Series with more controls than usual. Help!
« on: September 18, 2021, 05:59:51 PM »
Hi Folks!

I'm a long time bass player (67 years old) and finally bought an Alembic Stanley Clarke Series bass. It's beautiful and, of course, has the paperwork. That said, the fellow I bought it from is unfortunately suffering from dementia and early stages Alzheimer's. His wife handled the transaction and he was still able to have conversations but the memory is going. I've looked at all sorts of pics of the SC series but never seen one with so many toggle switches.

The paperwork says it has:
2 AZXY Vol
2 Tones
Pan
2 Q Switches
Bass and Treble Cut and Boost

There are two 3-position toggle switches which I assume are the Q switches.
There is one toggle switch for the LEDs
One toggle switch is next to the LED switch and appears to affect the bridge pickup when I have the pan? large position toward the top of the body is turned to that pickup. If I turn

While I've always wanted an Alembic I'm not familiar with all the controls and thought someone might be able to help me out.

I've attached a picture. I kept banging against the size limit so it's a small B and W.

Thanks!

Phil

Hi Phil welcome to the club. Looks like quite a nice bass, you will love it.

Meanwhile for reference here is a link to the FAQ about Signature basses which shows a labeled photo of the stock controls. Some of the layout of your controls is stock, some is not. The lack of a noise canceling pickup indicates it is a Signature, not Series, bass.

Your bass appears to have a pickup selector switch so I am not sure why your paperwork says it has a pan pot. Since it has a pickup selector the two knobs nearest to the pickups are volume. The two filters would work as described in the link above and the Q-switches are also in the stock location. The two toggle switches to the right of the filters are the bass/treble boost/cut switches which were a custom add. One of the two switches near the input jack will turn on the LEDs and my guess is the other one is a stereo/mono switch.

The bass/treble switches are a nice upgrade in a bass that already has a vast palette of tones to explore. Have fun!

Thank you SO much! Yes, I wondered about the "Pan" for the pickups. I will spend some time figuring it out. In the meantime, I played it at a gig. When I first got it I was a little worried about it being a little, I dunno, top heavy. But really good hemp based strap from Native Sons in NM and it held the bass very well. I kind of found my sweet spot with the bass position then everything just fell into place. I've never had that much fun playing a bass. Just amazing. Again, thanks for your help!

Stephen,

I did want to say that the two toggle switches to the right (as you described their location) are three position switches. So, I assume one would be bass and one treble. I suppose the middle position might be neutral or neither? I'm getting closer to figuring this thing out. I think I really scored well with this one.

It is more likely the electronics are Anniversary plus the bass/treble boost/cut switches

That's a lovely bass and welcome to the Alembic world.
That mod for the treble bass boost is something i would like for my basses.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

I may have missed something but give the serial number to Mica and she can give the skinny on the bass
