Loud broadband noise when plugged into IN-2
« on: December 02, 2021, 07:12:19 PM »
My Starfire started making a terrible broadband noise when plugged into the IN-2. Bypassing the IN-2 and using internal batteries has been fine. I opened up the bass, made sure everything was tight on the inside and then plugged into a DS-5R and all was good. Then, I yanked the IN-2 from the rack and brought it into my home studio and all was still good. Put it back into the rack, brought it to the gig and same problem.

One thing that's a bit odd about my IN-2 is that someone covered parts of the edge of the lids in masking tape. I'm wondering if maybe it might have some weird grounding issue or something triggered by being in a rack (pressure on the lids) and the masking tape stopped insulating. I know it sounds odd, but I can't think of anything else at this point. Anyone have a similar experience?

Meanwhile, my troubleshooting has been curtailed by being quarantined my room by COVID. Luckily, it's not severe.

Hi Edwin.  Sorry to hear you caught the bug - hope you have a quick and complete recovery.   Have you tried hooking up the IN-2 without actually mounting it in the rack, maybe just placing it on top of the rack.   That might tell you if the problem is the masking tape.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did in my home studio. I guess I'm questioning why it would need the tape in the first place and if so, why it only does it when the bass is plugged in and the pickups are on. It's not like what's going on there is all that complicated and the wiring is impeccable, of course. Maybe this weekend I'll have time to fire the whole rack up.

My guess is the tape was added to stop a rattle.

As soon as I'm done with my COVID isolation, I'll be able to do some tests.

Hey Edwin... what's up with the Covid isolation? Hope everyone in your family is OK!

I came down with COVID on November 28th, so I had to isolate myself. Yesterday, I could leave my room, but I'm still pretty weak and can't smell a thing. I'm just really happy that Dawn hasn't gotten it, because that would cause her business to crash and burn. Can't run a perfumery without a functioning nose! So far, so good.
