This is my main gigging setup these days.
« on: August 07, 2018, 06:14:55 AM »
Like a many here I had a QSC in this rack for many years and due to weight of carrying it and those mesa boogie cabs, I hardly ever took the rack out which was a shame. So last year I saved my gigging income to upgrade my bass rig and now ive changed cabs to barefaced big twin II and a barefaced big baby II and the power amp is now a crown XLS1502. I've only used two of those cabs together on one gig when I knew I wouldn't have PA support. Still getting used to the new sound which is completely different to the boogie powerhouse cabs I had previously. These are supposed to be neutral cabs and put out what you give them which I think at the moment works well with the alembic basses i've tried through it. Much more meat in the bottom end that I could get from my boogie cabs but less of that boogie mid and low mid punch that I really liked.
I've had a few issues with a gritty sound which I'm slowly working on by dropping the trim pots down a tad in the bass  incrementally as I gig more with the rig till I find a level that works well then set my other basses accordingly.

Overall it's been a great upgrade but I do think the QSL PLX is a better sounding amp, it seems to have more density and fullness of sound.

Nice rig Jazzy. Agree that the Barefaced gear is a great compliment to Alembic electronics. Good to hear you are getting a handle on the source of the gritty sound. You probably already know that the sound of the cabinets mellows and gets deeper as you break in the drivers, they need to be played at volume to do so.

Also upgraded my rig over the last six months. Replaced my Crest CA6 with a Crest ProLite 3.0 for a weight savings of almost 50 pounds. Retired my 95 pound JBL 15" cabinet and 60 pound Eden 2x10XST. Replaced them with a Barefaced Super Twin (39lbs) and Big Baby II (29lbs). I also looked at the Big Twin II but didn't want two high frequency drivers. So far I have been really happy with the cabinets. Also getting used to the change in sound. I have found the Barefaced cabs to be extremely sensitive to very slight changes in EQ from either the amp or the bass. As you get used to the natural sound of the speakers you can easily dial in or out the sound you want but first you have to play for a bit with no EQ and adjust to the largely neutral sound of the cabinets themselves. Once I did that I found that I only needed small amounts of EQ at the amp, primarily cuts to certain frequencies. I have been told that they sound really punchy out in the house and put out a ton of low end... much shaking of the walls. Surprisingly, though, I was also told by FOH that the new cabinets don't "excite the room" the way my old ones did resulting in a much cleaner sound in the room that compliments instead of fights with the PA. The other great thing for me is that, besides being much easier to move, both my cabinets, racks, the case for my Avalon U5 and the case for all my cords fits in the cargo area of my CRV now without having to put the seats down and I can still see out the back window. For the first time in years I am actually enjoying moving my rig.

It seems the older I get, the more weight (no pun intended) I give to how heavy a piece of equipment is when making changes in my rig.  My latest is replacing my pedal board with a Digitech iBP-10 multi effects unit that uses my old iPad II.  Smaller, lighter, and my back thinks it sounds just as good!  I've often watched bass players I'm playing with schlep their gear and thought "glad I play guitar"!  On the other hand I've  looked enviously upon fiddle amd flute players, too.  It's nice that technology is making it easier for us.  Heck, my 100w/channel stereo power amp in my rig wieghs in at 4 lbs!

Here's my current rig.

Sarno Music Solutions CTP (very similar to Alembic pres. My F2B really needs some work.  :( )
Crest Pro Lite 3.0
MAS 210 Flex, an interesting cabinet made by Mike Arnopol Soundworks. It puts out an unreal amount of sound for a 2x10 and is very clear and high fidelity. Deepness for days. My drummer has named it Thor. They no longer make this, but I would imagine the other cabs are comparable. It does outdoor gigs and the Fillmore in Denver with no problems. And it's the only cabinet I have not been able to blow up.

I'd be interested in hearing how you utilize the super filter I see in the rack. I just picked one up at a pretty good price on eBay and am researching how to make the most of its magic.

Thanks in advance.

I have mainly used it in a subtle way on the bottom end for reggae gigs as the filter stops way above the low frequencies I want to emphasise. Occasionally when I'm not in the pa I have added more to fill the room.

After years of looking on the S/H market I've eventually managed to find a new F-2B which should arrive soon. I contacted the closest Alembic Dealer to me which in Paris and  they had a NOS one that had been there for years, still boxed and gave me a good discount. So my compact rig will be up and running and ready for gigging in 2021. :-)

Lately, it's an older Mesa-Boogie Diesel 15 - a big 'ol heavy duty thing on casters, that can handle about anything I'll ever throw at it, sounds fantastic at any volume, and there's the added benefit of; I don't mind leaving it in the the Harwell-Grice Band's Truck/Urban Assault Vehicle, hence, I don't have to heft it around. So on gig-days, that gets me down to carrying a 3u Gator zipper rackbag with a Crown XLS 1000 and this fine old red knob Alembic F-1X. The Gator bag has a pouch for all my cabling, and extras, but I always bring a bag with a couple more... because... me. Then there's the agonizing choice of which Alembic. Hard to go wrong there.

There will come a day when I'll sell the Mesa D-800/Bag End S-15D stack... and it will be a sad one. That rig sounds pretty dad-gum mean too.

Congrats on the F-2B! I know you've been after one for a while.
