                  I remember STARS GUITARS very clearly from the Mid 1970s !   To what seems  to be to my recollection , STARS GUITARS  took up shop at the 60 BRADY St location in San Francisco  somewhat simultaneously as ALEMBIC was moving out and was under a different proprietorship then Alembic. There was a tall fellow whose name was Ron Armstrong who seemed to be at the helm . STARS GUITARS sold  some ALEMBIC inventory and served as a showcase it seems as a local outlet for some Alembic products from appearances  however did not do so exclusively and had some of their own items and products such as their own one piece bridges similar to LEO QUAN Bridge design which was a heavy duty refined FENDER variation to some extent made of brass and sometimes chrome plated . As well Stars  Guitars had their own electronic items . I remember a Solid State / non tube/ ( non valve in UK vernacular) pre-amp that I still have packed away somewhere that has Stars Guitars origin. There were various folks that appeared to work for Stars Guitars or  that may have done some Electronic fabrication other then  Ron Wickersham / Alembic . I remember  from what I recall  seeing both George Munday and his brother Peter  . I also remember seeing Jim Furman  . I am not sure who is responsible for the " STAR GRINDER"  exactly , however it may likely not have any direct ALEMBIC product lineage at all .

         I remember Stars Guitars. I remember Ron Armstrong from Stars Guitars as well as well as others that worked there. I remember when they were at the old Alembic location at 60 Brady St and later moved to 818 Folsom St , both locations in San Francisco. I went there often "back in the day ". I remember many of the various parts that they sold and in fact I once owned a "Stars Guitars" made bass . It was a bolt on neck bass that had a "Stars Guitars " Bridge on it , As well it had double P bass pickups ( two sets ) wired like a passive J Bass .  __________They experimented a bit and may have had a large turn around of folks involved from time to time ;)  ____Everyone was kind to me although I may have been very inquisitive and young .

My recollections are from many , many decades ago and do not write these recollections in stone , therefore please excuse me if they  are incorrect.

I had one of their "StarTone" units in my Strat for a while almost 40 years ago.  It was a two-band active on-board EQ that replaced the two passive tone pots.  The electronics were encased in a small black box filled with some type of opaque epoxy so that they couldn't be reverse-engineered.

Bill , That circuit build technique ;
" The electronics were encased in a small black box filled with some type of opaque epoxy so that they couldn't be reverse-engineered."  The Pluto Filter design  by Mr.George Mundy in my modified  old Starfire  Bass also had that . It was refered to as     "Potted In Epoxy " .________ Very interesting ! :)
  My old bass . Guild/Alembic w/ pluto electronics

Somewhere in a box I have a Rex Bogue Balz Deluxe, also encased in goo. It was pretty cool, although I had a problem with DC.

The electronics in my 1977 Music Man StingRay also are encased in epoxy. Thankfully I never had a problem with them.
