Ed King passes
« on: August 23, 2018, 12:28:20 PM »
When I saw the headline, the name looked familiar but I couldn't quite place him.  Then I saw that he was a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of the guitar players and songwriters, and that's where I knew the name.  But then I saw that previously he was a founding member of Strawberry Alarm Clock and a co-writer of Incense and Peppermints, which I did not know, and that he was originally from Southern California.  So, he wrote and played on major hits of psychedelic California 60's rock and 70's southern rock.

While in Junior High School, some friends and I tried to start a band.  We had four rehearsals - one at each of our houses, after which each of our moms banned us from each residence.  (Yea, we were that good!)  Inspired by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, we called ourselves the Prune Danish Handstand.

Never knew about the SAC/Skynyrd connection.

May the Four Winds Blow You Safely Home.

Well, crap.  Besides the fact that I am a LS fan from way back, Ed was an occasional participant on another of the guitar-oriented fora that I frequent, and always seemed like a nice guy - plus I've heard he could pick a little.   This sucks.

This is sad news indeed.Around 2003 I was involved in a band with a IndyCar driver that toured the IndyCar circuit performing before races. In Nashville we brought up Ed King to perform "Sweet Home Alabama" with us and he was a real gracious person.During rehearsals he would guide us through the nuances of the song and was real easy to get along with.Great guitar player.BIG hot sauce fan as well.Put it on everything.Much like me.

Here is a video of the show with ED.RIP Ed King.See ya on the other side.
