Author Topic: Did I mess up my power supply? (Read 171 times)

I was installing the power supply to my series 1 into a Furman rack box and power conditioner and lost my supply power to the bass from the power supply. Lucky for me I have 2 supplies. Anyway, I get power and signal to my amp from the basses batteries when I plug a guitar cord into 1/4 inch jack (not connecting the other end)and the signal goes thru 5 pin cable fine. I'm using the batteries at this point and wonder If I messed up the capasitors? I seem to have lost my power supply portion of the supply unit while my bass signal is there without power. Have I fatally drained the caps which had a charge to them before I did all this? Thanks, Sig in Texas

I don't think so. Once you plug in with the 1/4 jack, the batteries are engaged and the 5-pin doesn't do anything (no output from 5-pin). You said your bass signal is there without power and I'm not exactly sure what that means. Have you tested it with just the power supply and your amp?

Ron pionted out the fact that there is a heat sensor which acts like a fuse for the transformer in the power supply that is wire nuted to 110 power and when I sodered to it I caused the sensor to unfuse itself from the 110 power source. I was happy to realize I hadn't messed things up. We talked further about building the f1 preamp with the power supply built into it for the s1 and s2 players which I thought would be kind of neat. I ended up putting mine in a Furman Power box with the lights which is cleaner that having the loose box on top. Thanks Mica: as far as what was happening to me: I was plugged in to the power supply with the 5 pin and I would plug in a 1/4inck jack at the bass end only and that would turn on the power which I was not getting from the power supply because I had heated the sensor which caused it to brake the chain of power from the 110 supply. Which unit, wiring etc ... pics perhaps ?

OK: picture of power supply in furman and picture of rack. Thanks, for the interest and beware of that sensor that is attached to the transformer( it won't take any heat and acts as a fuse. I simply replaced it with a fuse. Sig

Siggytx - I know what you mean. That sensor you are talking about I think is a diode. It is put in line to act as sort of a fuse I think. I know if I were to leave my power supply in a hot car, this diode goes bad. It is a good idea to replace it with a fuse.

On the supply not working - One thing I know to check is the output of the power transformer. A simple electronic meter would do the trick. If the transformer has gone bad, the bass will never work with the power supply. Just a thought..Michael

Michael, you've never told me about your thermal protectors dying in hot cars. Has this happened frequently? I don't remember ever sending a replacement, but maybe you spoke with someone else.

Yep. They all passed away eventually. I just bypassed it. I have not asked for a replacement on them. It has not happened on the rack mount version, only the little blue boxes. It also did not happen on the older silver ones. I guess the older ones never had protection? Or someone before me did away with it..Michael
