Transparant Bass Body
« on: February 19, 2017, 01:33:03 PM »
I remember seeing Strat and Jazz shaped guitars ans basses with bodies made of a clear material.  Niles Rogers of Chic played one and wanted to know who made them.

BC Rich use to make them, now you can find them on Amazon. They are made of Acrylic, and weigh north of 15lbs. I had one at one time. Very cool with LED's in them, but hard to carry around. Here is a newer Korean guitar model

This might be it.

I don't know the answer to the question.  Back then, there were Dan Armstrong instruments; but I'm thinking those had a distinct body style.

A search on "clear acrylic guitar" finds a number of examples that apparently are being made now.

Comments found on the web suggest:

Pros: Sustain

Cons:  Weight, Tone, Scratches

And of course, as Joe mentioned, there's that look.  Having your guitar back-lit with blue LED's while it sits in the guitar stand waiting to be played could like nice.

I am 6'2", 210lbs, and considered to be in good shape. Having one of these basses around my neck brought me to my knees after 30-45 mins. Enjoy the look of other's playing them or sitting on a stand like David said :)

I saw an actual Fender P-Bass for sale a while back; body, neck, & fretboard all Lucite.  Some NAMM show freak; they wanted a metric buttload of coin for it, as i recall.

Thanks.  I have not seen a Lulcite body since the late 1970's

Ampeg and everyone missed an opportunity to sell far more of these instruments...if they'd lens-shaped the bodies they would magnify what was behind; play it low and...ya know...Tony

I played several Dan Armstrongs like this at music stores back in the day, both bass and guitar. They looked cool but did not really sound that great. I remember they had a piece of wood for a bridge that sat on the body. The plug in pickups were a good idea.

Of course I wanted one though!
