Claude Hudson "Butch" Trucks passed away yesterday at age 69.  Crap.

One of my guitar-playing co-workers came in to tell me that sad news today. No sooner he walked out and I read Mary Tyler Moore had died too.

It's getting tougher the older I get watching life's heroes age and move on, but to put it in perspective, this past week one of my band mates (and a good buddy) in Harwell Grice lost both of his parents. They buried his Dad on Thursday, and Saturday night following, his Mom died too. :'(  I can't even imagine that kind of empty.

What's important to remember is, what joy they left us to remember.

Agreed, focus on the joy.  Easy to say as some that leave feels like they scooped a piece of your soul from your core, but acceptance and rejoicing their time with us helps us heal.

In the same vein, Little Blind Willee passed on the 23rd. He was one of our cats, recently lost his vision and Sunday evening he made it clear it was his time.  A vet came to our house Monday evening so the rest of our pack would recognize his leaving.  That night I stepped outside and heard an owl.  The owl with its superior vision made me smile as I know that the owl was there to help guide Little Blind Willee to the Rainbow Bridge.

To Butch, MTM, Little Blind Willee and those to come - shine on as our lives are richer for knowing, loving and appreciating your gifts however big or small.

It gets worse; looks like it was suicide.

The story about motive in that article is conjecture, they don't actually know; and it feels to me somewhat irresponsible for them to publish that.

Offsetting that, here's Derek from last night; this was the show opener.

According to the newspaper link the Cowboy supplied, it would seem that shooting himself in front of his wife takes it out of the realm of conjecture, if that's correct.

I can not think of a more brazenly cruel thing to do to someone, as if all the pain and unanswered questions and opportunities for healing and rebirth lost were not heartbreaking enough is this had happened in private.  I've been there and stared that option down and ultimately decided I'd wind up killing more people than just me:  You can't leave all those who loved or cared about you with all those painful questions that can never be answered.

As big a fan of the ABB as I've been over the years, they've just got to be the biggest snake-bit Bad News Buffet I can think of.

Well put, Joey - but I'd say Synyrd's Buffet is bigger.

Joey; perhaps you misread my post, which suggests that "the story about motive in that article is conjecture".

Your reply that "shooting himself in front of his wife takes it out of the realm of conjecture" seems to miss the point about motive.  That the shooting was in front of someone says nothing about the motive behind the shooting.

The writers found a few recent instances of financial misfortune and decided to write those into their piece as if they were the motive for the shooting; but nothing in the article actually supports that.  The motive may have been something, or a number of things, that had nothing to do with his financial situation.

While the motive may have been financial, there was no direct evidence in the article supporting that.  It was conjecture; and it felt to me somewhat irresponsible.

Yeah Dave, I'm afraid I missed your meaning.  Gee, you think the reporters would go for a quick sensational angle instead of really digging for the truth? ? ? ? Say it ain't so . . . . .

Coz, I was living in Jacksonville in the late 80's when Allen Collins wrapped a new Thunderbird around a tree, killing the girl riding with him while simultaneously putting himself in a wheelchair, AND doing it AFTER his Driver's License had been revoked for life (a Florida legal term) for the second time.  You might be right.

And, as always, remember kids, There's No Bidness Like Show Bidness !

The thing that saddened me was that (according to the article linked to above) the family & police seem to have wanted to keep it private - I really didn't need to know that it was suicide. The cat is out of the bag now, but was it really necessary for a reporter to go out and dig up this information? I can only imagine what the Allman Bros. extended family is going through...

Agreed, a loss is a loss. Details are not a requirement for grieving and healing. Media regularly disappoints with their 'coverage', I find the need for a lot of self-censoring.
