Saw John for his opening show on the currrent US tour. It was great. The started at 8PM and played straight though till 10PM. Anyone going to hear the old Mahavishnu stuff will be disappointed as they did not do any.

John can still play the heck out a guitar but he left plenty of room for the other 3 musicians to do their thing. Hadrien Feraud is just awesome. I noticed during concert John and Hadrien would appear to be messing with each other on a kind of If I do this can you do it to? thing. It resulted in a lot of very fast dual runs when they were improvising.

I would highly recommend seeing them if you can.

I gather John McL doesn't touch any of the Mahavishnu stuff anymore, he did used to perform 'Meeting of the Spirits' acoustically with Paco and Al but that was about it.
I saw him with Shakti Revisited at The Sage in Gateshead UK, he only did one tune from the old Shakti set 'La Danse Du Bonheur' but I did hear him play a phrase from Lila's Dance which was from 'Visions of the Emerald Beyond' which no one caught onto.
I have just purchased 'Trio of Doom' which he plays with Jaco & Tony Williams. First four numbers are live, recorded in Havana in 1979, the last numbers are studio recordings of the same tracks. It is blistering on the ears as well as very funky. Worth checking out if you are a J.McL fan

first was with mahavishnu orch in central park in 73
this is where the live album was recorded
second at bklyn college when he played with herbie hancock i believe...

I'm headed down to Lisner Auditorium in DC to see him tonight. I've seen him previously in duo w/Jonas Hellborg; Trio w/Kai Eckhardt & Trilok Gurtu; Trio w/Dominique DiPiazza & Trilok Gurtu and Trio with Joey DeFrancesco & Dennis Chambers.

Looking forward to this, as it's been more than 10 years since I've seen him.

I like Trilok Gurtu; and of course I've always liked Dennis Chambers. I like Kai Eckhardt a lot too. And Jonas Hellborg does some pretty cool stuff too.

Aaaaah those were the days!
I discovered him via my brother!
But I actually SAW him live in Brussels with Jean-Luc Ponty on violin and a very young black bassplayer. Some Johnson (

) guy but you know my problems with names!
He (the bassplayer on a weird pink precision) did a solo with included sounds that came near to a Lockheed F104 Starfighter roaring through the venue!
I was in my I-V, I-V, I-V ...period (still are) so the attempt to toss my bass out the window was great!
Oh well ...I'm still playing!
Didn't found that sound though.

It was a really good show. They did Jozy as a tribute to Joe Zawinul. Other tunes included Hijacked, Nostalgia and Mother Tongues. I still prefer McLaughlin acoustic, but was glad for the opportunity to see him again.

Saw him in Montreux in '81. Him and Chick Corea together (if memory serves), and I think it might have been Jimmy Haslip on bass (he backed several other artists on the main stage there). My brain couldn't keep up, so I left the show. Too many notes!

I saw his trio in 1987 in Leeds. Jonas helborg had just left to be replaced by Jeff Berlin. They played a storming version of Joe Frazier and filled out the set with some of the tunes from Adventures in Radioland.
I loved some of the effects trilok gurtu was getting by lowering various percussion tools into buckets of water. very expressive.

According to Hadrien Feraud's website they kick off a european tour in may 2008. Hopefully they'll remember that Scotland is still part of the EU.
