I also learned of him through Widespread Panic (and his brief appearance in the movie Slingblade). There was a startling honesty in his music that people rarely feel comfortable showing. I wouldn't say he was one of my favorite songwriters, but in a sea of mediocrity, he was certainly a unique and compelling personality.
