The World Guitar Show makes one of its twice yearly stops in San Rafael (just down the road from Alembic) this weekend. Literally thousands of guitars and basses and, sometimes, one or two Alembics. Lots of other cool stuff too! I'll be there both days. Is anyone else going? Maybe we can hook up. This is always BIG FUN!

The guitar show was a lot of fun. No Alembics, but a beautiful old Becvar Triple Omega with Star Wars/sci-fi themed inlays and what appeared to be Alembic Series I electronics. I picked up two instruments. One on the way to the show from a craigslist seller: An Ibanez Professional 2680 Bob Weir guitar in very nice shape for its age. At the show, I found a sweet Vox Mark VI Phantom reissue from 1999 that is in pristine condition. Very cool guitar.

I'll post some pics of both when I get some time to take some pics in the next day or two. Right now I've got the Weir model on a stand right next to Woody. Sort of like Bobby and Jerry hanging out in my living room!

I've got one of those 2680s and it's a nice axe, although a bit heavy. It gets a very nice crisp tone. I added a middle single coil pickup a la Bob's and an active tone circuit I built onto a piece of perfboard. Fun guitars and used to be very cheap (I paid $350 or so with hardshell case. If I had left it alone, it would probably be worth some money!). Oh yeah, I also got Bob to sign it.

It's amazing to me (and so fortunate) that so many of the Japanese-built (before Taiwan, Korea, etc,) are so cheap, relatively speaking.

I used to complain that people would pay 'ransom my mother' prices for clapped out Fenders and Gibsons just because they were old. Now I'm just tickled that the vintage market IS so narrow. I hope they never wise up to SG2000's, SA2200's, any of a number of Ibanez Artists and GBensons, Aria PE's, etc. Much less my faves, the basses. ESPECIALLY 'coffee-table' basses

I always thought about picking up one of those Ibanez professionals. What's the neck like? I saw one of the doubleneck Artwood reissues at the Sam Ash in NYC this past fall. Wow! What a beautiful instrument.

The neck is slightly wide, (just the way I like it) 1.71 at the nut - identical to my '76 Series I. It is nicely rounded C as opposed to the D shape on the Alembic (which is currently up in Santa Rosa getting the neck re-shaped). This is not a light guitar, about 10 lbs would be my guess. I chased a Tree of Life version this morning on ebay. It went for $1525.

Congrats Bill that's a beauty! I know Bobby was fond of humbuckers that could cut through and compliment Jerry - does it have good mids and highs? I struggle with the same. The lead in my band plays a strat that just sings - I tend to stick to humbuckers but have trouble cutting through at times (probably just me, lol).
