It was great to see the Beach Boys can still play & sing too! Madonna should take a lesson from these guys, there was no lip syncing there!!

And, as we run far afield from the topic of this thread, I would like to add my +1 to the Beach Boys. Years ago, at the height of my musical snobbery, I went to see Roger McGuinn open for the Boys at Madison Square Garden. At the time I thought Roger was COOL and the Beach Boys were NOT COOL. But since I was already there, I stayed for the Boys' set. Yes, they ROCKED the house, and gave everybody a good time. The normally hard-to-impress and aloof New York crowd (please no one take offense, I am from NYC) found themselves singing Fun, Fun, Fun together in the subway afterward. I'd never seen THAT before!

I got so tired of hearing people from my age group singing the praises of Madonna because her performance at the Superbowl was so good for someone her age. There was no performance, it was fake recorded music from 20 years ago. It was more of a dance recital than a performance! And here we had the Beach Boys who are 20 years older than Madonna actually singing their songs & still hitting the high notes for the most part! Now THAT was a performance!

Didn't see it; now you're making me wish I did.  My response to the promos, however, was Can you call it a Beach Boys reunion with 2 out of 3 Wilson brothers gone?  (And who'd a ever thunk Brian would be the last one standing?)  Glad it well for those left.  Carl Wilson was one of the most under-rated guitarists ever, IMO.

While we are veering off course. Yes the Beach Boys had me pleasantly surprised also.

Dave Grohl's speech was a highlight also - 'real music isn't always perfect'.

No auto tune, no computerized final production, no lip syncing - just get out there and play it like you REALLY mean it because you love it - not because it puts money in your (record executives) pocket(s).

Yes, I loved Dave's speech too! I don't think the producers of the show did though, they turned out the lights on him & cut his mic off!

First huge apologies to the OP for the continued highjack!

As to the BB's:  I saw last year's touring line up of the Beach Boys and was totally flabbergasted at how much of the original vocal well, beauty, was alive and well (along with ass-kicking band performance).  And that was only with Mike Love and Bruce Johnston in the lineup.  I should be embarrassed to have been surprised at all - I'm 57 and have passed up dozens of opportunities to see the band (generally because Aw it's not the original band anymore anyway.).  What a waste on my part!

As far as original members in the 2012 Beach Boys lineup, Bruce Johnston has been with the band since the late 60s (and had his own his with Hey Little Cobra before joining up).  Al Jardine's an original and when are you likely to see Brian Wilson on stage with these guys again?  If you can catch them, don't make the mistake I've been making all these years.

This year's Grammies definitely had a place for the old - McCartney actually got introduced to a whole generation, many of whom'd never heard of him.  I noticed the Allmans little acknowledgement too.  I think R&R has now been around for enough generations that even the musical media establishment could begin to realize that the current flavor of the month is overwhelmed in importance by a huge parade of luminaries (Sorry Lady GG!).

Kudos to Dave Grohl's comments too.  In light of his statements, it was pretty funny to see the FF's featured during the electronic music section of the show!

I think Dave Grohl may have intorduced a new generation to the fact projects can recorded on tape, and you have to be able to play it yourself. And you pitch correct it and set the tempo BEFORE you hit START.

What a concept ! ! !

How positivley prehistoric ! ! !

I quantize in my head..  ;)

Never been a big Allman Brothers fan, but lately have been gigging with some guys who play Jessica, Whipping Post and a few others and it's been fun.  Can't deny what the Allmans have done for music over the years.
