Peter, I'm sorry for your loss...I had to put my cat Spud down a four years ago and it was horrible; she'd been my one constant through relationships, jobs, homes and been from my twenties to my forties, so we had history...I have tons of stories of her fighting the dogs of the 'hood, and many are STILL scared of my house, she never lost, even against pit bulls...Thankfully I now have the lovely Emily who doesn't fight dogs and isn't as smart as Spud was, but she's really funny...she's four and still chases her tail and other silly things; keeps me laughing...

Her name came from how closely her coat matched the red rocks at Sedona, AZ.

The best thing about love with a pet is that it's the emotional equivalent to nuclear fusion; it grows with contact and time and becomes more than it started with and benefits everyone around...

So true. We had a parakeet that showed up in our garage. According to his band he was 3 months old and he was utterly incapable of flight. We tried to find his owner and then we just figured he found us. He became part of the family. I had never known that birds had such deep personalities. Aside from the fact that he developed a huge vocabulary (and was scarily often appropriate in its use), he had a truly wonderful soul. He was feisty as all heck (nothing like a kick in the head fly-by) but if you were out of sorts, he'd stop his shenanigans and do his best to comfort you. He'd fly onto your shoulder and say Hi baby, baby and nibble on your lip. He died unexpectedly at 5 years old (they typically live to 10) and I was just devastated. I still am. To be honest, I had no desire for a pet and I still don't but he wanted to be with us so we just had to go with it. When love presents itself, you can't turn it down.

I can tell from the look in Sedona's eyes she was a compassionate soul.

A compassionate soul indeed, Edwin. Cats & squirrels excepted, she loved every creature she met; even got along with my wife's nasty little Minature Schnauzer. And everyone she met reciprocated, even my Mom, who has no use for dogs. Wnen we went to the breeder, she was in a litter of seven; one look in the eyes and we both knew........
