I believe this bass to be an epic in a signature standard body. 98k11629. Any suggestions on what I might get for this instrument? Is $2500 too high? I guess I'll try eBay as Craigslist doesn't seem to be doing the trick... please follow this link for more pics:

The serial number indicates it is a 1998 Essence. You've got a maple neck there with walnut lams, and yes, a standard shape. I can't tell about the electronics from the picts, but an Essence has three knobs on the front. If it has a switch in addition to that, it's probably a Q switch.

I saw your ad on CL the other day...neat bass. Can you describe the controls? How much does the bass weigh? I'm looking for a gig bass so my Series 2, which like yours has the Stanley Clarke shape, can stay at home safe from the hooligans.

Just checked the Craig's list picts. This doesn't have standard Essence electronics, perhaps another group member can identify them. However, the neck-through construction, the gold hardware, the fretboard with no abalone ovals--those are all standard Essence features [The Epic, a lower priced model, has a bolt-on neck.].

Pricewise, $2500 seems a bit steep to me, though it is a nice looking bass.

I think you are right bsee - an Essence in an SC shape with Epic electronics. It definately has four knobs. Volume, Treble, Bass, and(I think) Pan. [If Pan is what makes it sound more or less alive - don't know how else to describe it. I think it is how much active pick-up is used???]

Pan selects between the two pickups. Fully one way should sound round and bassy, all the way the other way would be crisp, tight and more treble.

This is a nice looking bass. Zebrawood top, looks like a Purpleheart body lam, and Mahogany body. Crown headstock. Probably short scale.

The control layout looks unusual. It is not the standard Epic layout. It looks as if it were originally the standard Essence configuration with a extra control added subsequently (the one that's really close to the jack). Perhaps it was originally Essence and then sent back to remove the filter and add bass and treble. Nice bass. Anyone interested should make a serial number request.
