that is a neat bass. How bad is the neck damage, ya think?

Looks like it took a pretty hard shot at the headstock. The finish is fracture all over the place but without better pics or seeing it there's really no way to tell how bad it really is. At least it's not in two pieces.
If you'll notice Zitro's going for the Elan also!

The seller says:
a small crack in the laminate at the base of the headstock, but the folks at Alembic assured me it's non life threatening and can be fixed for $75 to $125.

If he's correct, there should be no problem structurally.

He also says:
There is no reserve but considering the book value and who owned it, i will not give it away.

Wonder how he'll accomplish that without a reserve? His high bids will likely come in 3 seconds before the auction ends - by then it's too late to terminate.

I have a 77 short scale,which is a very fine bass. ( FYI:My 77 Series Short Scale )

This crack looks to me to be more than a simple $125 fix. The cracks in these 2 pix look to be into the wood itself.

Yikes - I hadn't looked closely at the back of neck pic - I wouldn't touch that myself, but apparently Alembic can repair a severe headstock crack,although not for $75! I had a small laminate lift near the back headstock join of a Series 1 a few years ago - sent it to Alembic who repaired that for $75. very minor cosmetic issue in my case.

maybe it's my attorney side coming thru again, but if seller recently purchased this bass from the estate of grover washington, jr., then his estate was in probate for almost 8 years. he died in 1999! in reading his bio, it seems he was a stable, ordered, mature man who did many great things outside of the music world. alot of charity work and such. strange that his estate would be so messed up that it's still around this many years later. maybe seller meant to use a different term than estate. normally, at least in texas, estates are liquidated well within 3 years and certainly personalty is sold off way before then.

Hey Olie nice catch! Looks like the crack follows the maple laminate. Dropped on the headstock? As far as estate sale goes..maybe she was playing just fine until she dropped on the headstock. Now it's time to sell it. No accusations intended , just plausable denial.

This repair would probably be in the $75-125 price range, but it will cosmetically still be obvious. We inject glue in the cracked wood, clamp it and then use superglue to set the finish so it doesn't chip off.

If in person the damage is more severe than it appears, it could get to $400, but there would be a difference in color between the repaired area's finish and the original finish.

I did a little enhancement on the pix and it looks like the crack follows the neck joint.
