it really doesn't look it to me. Possibly Walnut?

I wonder how many of these went out the door with a Stanley sticker. Is he claiming the body is Koa or the top/back? The top/back look like cocobolo. Maybe the $8,000 was metric dollars.

While I wouldn't stand up and say that's definitely koa, the pics are all on the dark side and the grain does look sort of koa like. I think it would take a more accurate picture or a wood card to tell the tale. Koa neck stringers would be pretty unusual, but who knows what sort of experiments they were doing with wood types back in '87.

In any case, at $8K for a signature instrument, it almost wouldn't matter what the woods were in terms of value.

Definitely not Koa to my eyes either. Its also priced about $4000.00 too much.

My guess is maple & purpleheart neck, mahagony core w/maple lams & rosewood top & back. I don't see anything that remotely resembles koa.

Yep, I say rosewood too. I had one of these from around the same build date. And I believe on these models, especially with the signature on the headstock, rosewood was the go to wood for front and back at the time.

The discription is stating 'Body is Hawaiian Koa'. I have seen few Alembics with Koa center but I can't make it sure from pics. The top would be Indian Rosewood.
