Standard point conversion

Has anybody ever converted a Standard Point body into an Omega cut? Was it a big $ job? I'm sure it would be easier than converting an Omega to a Standard Point! Do tell...

Hello Bryant,

I'm not sure if anyone 's done that yet, but I did have the point on my fretless cut off some years back (although that was not exactly a standard body);  I did ask Mica some time ago if changing a point into an omega would be possible. As I recall the answer was yes, but with some caveats.
Much depends on the specific instrument; series instruments would be the hardest because usually on standard point models there is a backplate for the batteries right where the omega would be.  A standard point Mark King or any other non-series model would be easier, although it would still be expensive; the bass would have to stripped and refinished ( that alone runs 1150$); to that you 'd have to add the labor for carving out the omega.

On a series instrument you ' d likely have to rout a new cavity, unless you were willing to use the five-pin jack exclusively, so you could give up the battery cavity.  Plus the old cavity would have to be fixed to fill up the holes in a way that looks good.

I thought that one of the Club members here had that conversion made on a Mark King as part of a damage repair.  There were pictures of the conversion.  In fact, I think it was made into a Triple O.  Anyone else remember this?

Peace,

Yeah, James.  I think I found it in the FTC Archive. The thread is called Bobby's Transmogrification.  http://club.alembic.com/Images/631/761.html?1026499255
From the comments in the thread, it's clear the bass is being renovated. I assume the bass was originally a point, because Mica explains that the Triple O shown being carved originally had no heart or side omegas.
