I've finally got it.
« on: August 27, 2004, 02:19:20 PM »
I've figured it out. This is the bass i want. no joke.
5-string Balance K Heart Omega body.
Macassar Ebony top and back with Coco Bolo back plates,Myrtle core and purpleheart accent.
Lined Fretless Mahogoney (excuse the repulsive spelling) Neck with ebony lams and coco bolo fingerboard.
Crown headstock.
For the logo, I want the stealie/alembic logo that was on Phil Lesh's old basses on the headstock.

As for the electronics, i wanted to get the same i have on my other fretless 5 (sn# 04x13212). I'm pretty sure i was told the electronics were custom picked and placed for it, and i want to get as close as possible to those electronics, even though it is a different body style.
So! I want this bass. for real. Mica or val could you tell me how much? Thank you sooo much! :]

Hello Austin,

I have one question before we start talking prices: do you want a neck-through or a set-neck? That decision will affect prices, so let us know which way you want to go.

Hey Val
I definetly want a neck through on the bass. I've been doing some thinking and i want to change the core wood to Mahogoney, with maple accents.
Thanks for getting back to me.

Hello Austin,

I thought about your bass for a bit and figured out that it would be less expensive to start from a 5 string Essence model.
This is how it breaks down:
5 string Essence bass                 :  4300
Macassar ebony top                    :  1500
Add Macassar ebony back               :  2100
Balance K heart omega (no contours)   :   900
or Balance Heart omega with contours  : (1300)
Ebony neck laminates/w mahogany       :  1450
Coco Bolo fingerboard                 :   200
Coco Bolo backplates                  :   300
Crown headstock                       :   200
Epic electronics                      :   100
Stealie/Alembic logo inlay            :  3000
lined fretless  - no charge -
mahogany core - standard -
maple body accents - standard -
The Stealie/Alembic logo inlay is non discountable and would be paid directly to Alembic.
It  all adds up to 13,850 $ for a Balance K with no contours and to 14,250 with the contours.

Feel free to call me if you want to talk about it in more detail.

Hey Val
That sounds great, but i've gotten a couple more ideas. These are the last, i promise
First, i want to do some coco bolo pick-up covers and knobs. I like the contrast between ebony and coco bolo and i kind of want that to be the theme for the bass. Secondly, Would it be at all possible to put blue led's in the eyes of the inlay? I'd like to put some green ones on the side of the neck, too. And lastly, Could you put a big capital manuscript A on the back of the headstock?
Ok! I'm out of ideas....or...i'll stop confusing you with them, at least. That's it! Thanks so much, Val!!!
Austin
BTW, I would have called, but it's still 6 am over there and my ideas are fresh. haha.

Hello Austin,

it's all possible. The green side leds are 870$, I'll check with Susan on pricing for the other items. BTW, Mingus is my absolute favourite bass player and one of my 2 favourite composers.

Okay, Val, give - who's your other favorite composer?

(sorry for wandering off topic, and I don't want to see the thread hijacked with a lengthy digression on everyone's personal favorites, but you can't just make a statement like that and leave it hanging...)

The other composer? that's easy...the master. Duke Ellington.

With a little help from Billy Strayhorn, Val. :-)

I agree with you, great stuff and a respectable man. I love big band - sometimes I feel I was born about 50 years too late (movies, music, art).
